I'm just curious. How many pitches is "normal" for a HSSB game. For us and our opponents over the last 8 years, we've been been at 5.7 pitches per out for over 9,300 outs. I don't know why it would be any different for SB as opposed to BB, but I was curious.

How did you come up with the 5.7 pitches per out figure?

I will say that there is no normal as it will vary by the type of pitcher. Using your figure of 5.7 pitches per out multiplied by 21 outs in a 7 inning game equates to about 120 pitches per 7 inning game. My DD is a power pitcher who gets quite a few strikeouts. She will sometimes go deep in the count and there are many foul balls. I would expect that 120 is about right for her. I am thrilled when she stays below 100. However, a pitcher who spins the ball will throw fewer pitches and may only rarely get beyond 100 in a game unless she is getting lit up and remains in for some reason.

My DD is not a power pitcher and throws about 70% strikes (probably a little too high) so a lot of balls get put in play. She usually throws around 85 pitches per 7 innings.

A few 10U stats from 4 games into our Fall season. Not sure if they are usable for your needs....

Pitcher 1 - 7-2/3 IP, 35 batters, 119 pitches = 3.4 pitches/batter, 5.2 pitches/out
Pitcher 2 - 4-1/3 IP, 32 batters, 128 pitches = 4 pitches/batter, 9.9 pitches/out
Pitcher 3 - 1 IP, 3 batters, 8 pitches = 2.7 pitches/batter, 2.7 pitches/out

EDIT: Added pitches/out (Nice stat, SoAZDad!)

From the last ASA Labor Day Tourney, 12U A playing in 12U open:

Pitcher 1 - 14-2/3 innings pitched, 65 batters faced, 227 pitches = 3.5 pitches/batter and 5.2 pitches/out
Pitcher 2 - 14-1/3 ip, 73 bf, 261 pitches = 3.6 p/b and 6.1 p/o
Pitcher 3 - 13.0 ip, 56 bf, 161 pitches = 2.9 p/b and 4.1 p/o.

I have data for many seasons for 10U, 12U, and 14U but nothing for HS. Let me know if you want more.

Pitches / (IP * 3)

I’m not trying to create a debate about whether power pitchers are superior to finesse pitchers! I was just curious. ;)

Are the definitions for a power and finesse pitcher the same in SB as in BB?

The ML considers a power pitcher to be one who walks or Ks 28% of all batters faced, where a Finesse pitcher is one who walks or Ks less than 24% of all batters faced.

Our 14U TB team in the averaged 16.4 pitches per inning over 174 innings that I scored on gamechanger.

Eric and SoAZDAD,

Thank you. No need to show any more.

I figgered there wouldn’t be a lot of difference between SB and BB, or from one level to the next.

In case anyone’s interested, here’s every appearance for our pitchers from last season. In baseball, the coach is super happy when they see low PPerOut for obvious reasons. ;)
