the other corkscrew curve thread got me a thinkin' about how pitchers scuff/pine tar/spit/Vaseline balls in baseball. How many of you will fess up that you have taught your DD some tricks in fastpitch along similar lines. It never occurred to me before, but DD does have a resin bag in the circle and a rough and smooth side does help break. I have never said a word about this side of the game before but I sure am tempted :)

Resin or rosin? Upon occasion I have seen some pitchers who have ended up with a rock rosin (resin) bag in the circle. My DD learned a long time ago not to toss the scuffed or cut ball back to umpire.

The only "trick pitch" I've shown kids is releasing straight from the back swing as the arm starts the circle. I let them know it's illegal and that any ump should call IP if they try it in a game. (I've also shown the behind-the-back pitches, but not for them to try.)

It works in baseball due to the smaller size of the ball.

With a softball, the amount of goop used or scuffing needs to be proportionally larger to have the same effect.
Also, the baseball travels a longer distance from the pitcher to the plate giving the doctored effect more distance to work.

It's not the longer distance per se. A couple of the key variables are time and velocity. The time is often similar between baseball and softball pitches, so the higher velocity is typically a main reason.

PS - You're correct about the sizes.

If I am reading this right, it is only illegal if they then fake the windmill motion after release. Otherwise throwing from what essentially a 't' or 'k' drill is not illegal and is no different to pitching slingshot.

But not as much fun for the kids! ;)
