It's good you did catch it early.
My DD was diagnosed after a CAT and MRI, with 2 stress fractures which sidelined her for a year.
It got that bad because her regular doctor diagnosed as strain and we would just give it 2 weeks rest and then go again, then 2 weeks rest again when the pain wouldn't go away, and then added to my DD not wanting to be "baby" and trying to pitch through the pain.

Indiana- there is a great thread on this problem as Rubber Biscuit's DD also suffered stress fractures in the supporting elements of her vertebrae. These stress fractures ( found at "Lower back maintenance - A question to you cagey veterans of pitching out there") cause pain that is often attributed to disk problems because the symptoms are so similar. It seems that this is becoming an increasingly common problem in adolescent athletes- it is so good for you to share your DD's experience so that other parents can learn more about the problem and learn to ask the right questions and get the testing done that will ensure a correct diagnosis.

Jojo - I'm so glad your daughter is doing better. I've learned so much from this forum - it is thanks to you all that I actually took DD straight to the orthopedic surgeon. I knew that if a doctor said "strain" that DD would pitch through it, just like everyone's daughter here.

MandM -thank you - it is so important to get the word out regarding overuse. I never thought it would happen to my own kid (that sounds dramatic - it's a back injury not an after school special drug addiction) but it did happen and we have learned so much from it. Anyway thanks everyone for all of your support, knowledge and wisdom!
