I recently found out that the TB Coach calls the pitches. The way he does it is he gives the kind of pitch to the pitcher and the location to the catcher. What do u think? I don't like it! I think the catcher needs to know what is coming that them. I am going to talk to the coach to find out why he does this. Let m know what yall think. Thanks!

Let me edit this in. What is a better way do this? Coach to catcher then pitcher? What r different way to disguise the signals from the other team?

I have a feeling you might find out a bit of a different story when you poke around some more with yer team.

I do not see it possible for a catcher to not know what pitch is coming (even at the 10/12U age just seeing FB/CU).

If this IS by chance the case => RUN AWAY!!

It makes no sense to do it that way. The catcher needs to know if it's a drop ball for sure they are hard enough to deal with without being surprised by it. Silly way to do it imho.

Coaches typically signal the pitch into the catcher and the catcher give the sign to the pitcher, so if nothing else the pitcher and catcher are on the same page.

How is he signaling in the signs? Surely the catcher and pitcher can see both signs.

At least he doesn't poll the audience or phone a friend.

First, I'd ask him if he is a NFCA certified pitch caller. Then I'd suggest that he let the catcher and pitcher work together to call pitches.

He faces the catcher and gives the signal between his legs then he signals pitcher behind his back. Neither the catcher nor pitcher see the sign they get. I don't know if he is trying to hide the signal from the other team. I will ask next time we practice.

I thought it was weird.

I would agree, but only if weird can be interpreted to mean idiotic.

I imagine his thinking is along these lines - Let's see if we can't fool both the hitter and the catcher. Bonus points if we end up hurting the catcher, and double bonus points if we can get the umpire because the catcher doesn't know what's coming.

In your face
Both the pitcher and the catcher should know what's going out and coming in, if not that's a recipe for disaster. Location for the catcher doesn't let them know if it's a rise, drop, curve, screw, change up, off speed.

The best way to do it IMO is to teach the catcher how to call the pitches in a game and let them do it. The coach can explain his/her philosophy of when and why to call a pitch and let them roll with it.
