    Fake Bunt Question

We have all seen girls who fake bunt by waggling their bat all over the place while the pitcher is preparing to deliver the pitch.

My question is have you ever seen one of those batters hit the next pitch? I can't remember but I know I've never seen a bunt follow these theatrics.

I can't remember anyone hitting after one of those performances so I'm thinking that the waggling bat, as distracting as it may be, might be best dealt with by throwing right down the middle or a little inside.

    (I'm talking U12)

See it all the time. Keeps corners honest. At 10u I would only have my better contact hitters do this. I think the older girls do much more. I would throw up and in.

The poster said "waggling the bat", so this isn't a batter faking a bunt. This is about the girl who puts the bat over the plate and shakes it rapidly during the pitch. (Really, really stupid...but, hey, the coach told her to, and the coach played one year of HS baseball, so he has got to be right.)

I don't see bat waggling after 12U. (Obviously, fake bunts are quite common.)

A "waggle" is taught to mainly distract the pitcher and induce her into throwing a ball or get the catcher to drop the pitch. The reason you see it more at younger levels is that it is considered "bush" by more experienced coaches. Also, as you progress up the age brackets the pitchers and catchers are less likely to be distracted by these type of antics.

My catchers and I had an understanding; no matter what the call was, if the batter turned to bunt, they were getting high and inside, no exceptions.

Word got around that would happen and after a few hit batters and a few bruised fingers, they pretty much quit trying.
