I really want to know how she grips/throws this. I had a Hal Skinner moment watching her pitch. That ball started out at 60 and started slowing down around 20 feet, stopped completely for a fraction of a second and then continued on at 40 mph as it dropped in for a strike. Viscious, filthy, nasty pitch.

She is a Rita Lynn Gilman pitcher, so I would look .ar Rita Lynn's YouTube videos. Maybe it's on there.

That is, if you can stand to listen to her talk.

JJ,

Haven't you heard about that pitch? It's the Fire-stop-n-putt-putt change-up.

Both my DDs throw a change we call the butterfly.(back door) Makes batters do the craziest things. last weekend watched a lefty going for a bunt, pull back well after the pitch is on its way and still swing and miss. been in great discussions on this site about change ups being to slow.my belief is no such thing, Waldrop and others in this years series are exhibit A.

I am becoming a big fan of that pitch. I like how it tends to stay low, looks like a regular pitch, moves, and seems to be easy to learn. I have found success teaching it by not telling them it is a change up. I have them throw it at at full speed, then by adjusting the grip and other components we slow it down to the desired velocity.

I think it's a little early to make this claim,.....but we'll see.

Exhibit B could be:
- FL St was not against what I would call "offensive threatening teams" in their regional
- First round jitters and being over-amped may have psuedo-amplified the goodness of her slow change
- Let's see how MI does against that change the second time at bat.

Here are a few shots of her grips:

No idea what pitches she throws with these but I did find it interesting that in every shot I could find of her, the thumb was opposite the pinky. In at least one shot, the thumb was off the ball. I think Fico had a grip like that as well.

Point Taken. I'm not saying that the 20mph drop change is better than the standard 10, but I do believe it is as affective. pretty sure we could both agree having both is best as Waldrop does. I will agree that SF is no Arizona but she would throw three of those in a row and the batters still couldn't barrel it up. They are D1 players after all. I do find it interesting how so many coaches hold the change up to completely different standards than all the other pitches. One batter waits on a change and drives or its a bad looking ball they immediately quit calling it or drastically reduce it from the plan. If you held any other pitch to that standard most pitchers would have nothing left to throw after the first inning.
