I saw five different pitchers over the weekend. Only one pitcher had good form.

One kid had talent and decent form, but the pitching instructor had never taught her the "the shoulder dip". My guess is that she is being robbed of 3MPH to 5MPH. And, as you know, going from 55 MPH up to 60MPH is a huge jump.

Another kid has a lot of talent, but had one of the wackiest windups I've ever seen...it was totally robbing her of speed and control.

So frustrating...

I saw a high school freshman last week, that had been taught the step style. The instructor apparently knew she was supposed to teach "slam the hips shut". but didn't know why or how to teach it. Poor kid was slamming her hips in mid pitch and throwing around herself. She had no control and no change, or any other breaking pitch. She was SO frustrated that she had been doing it wrong for so many years and all the times she was screamed at to CLOSE YOUR HIPS!

Once you become a student of pitching and really start watching you come to the sad realization that the vast majority of pitchers have very poor mechanics.

I have watched an instructor coach a kid out of a nice whip and teach lean forward and pull up as hard as possible. The pitchers speed steadily got worse through the whole lesson and the instructor's advice was to just pull up harder. Was very hard to not walk over and say something.

Watched one of my ex-students go to a a very high priced high credentialed instructor who took her form the upper 50's to the low 50's, teaching her push down, pull up, HE and donkey kick the back the leg.

Shoulder dip is fairly self explanatory. On a right handed pitcher, her right shoulder should be lower than the left, at release.

Shoulder dip is something I haven't thought about. Here are several that don't seem to utilize dip:

I'm sure I could easily find several more examples who do use shoulder dip. I think Finch is one of the more classic examples, but I couldn't find a decent shot of her at release.
