I think I liked 35 and it worked OK. I think I would be worried about the pitcher getting hurt by a ball hit back at her a 30' more so then her pitching but I have never done it.
Our experience with 30' was a few top pitchers were dominating, the decent ones could throw strikes without being in danger and the weaker ones struggled to throw strikes (which resulted in coach pitch instead of BB).

Since 30' is the standard here, all the leagues have pitching plates at that distance. It seems other areas of the country just starting kid pitch at 8U tend to just use their existing 35' plates.

Like some others have said ours is a hybrid of kid/coach pitch. It is from 30' but with an 11" softie/safety ball.

The girls that are 8U are using an 11 inch softie, I think. I wouldn't swear to it. The parents bring the balls for that age group, but I am throwing it, too. When I use a harder 11 inch ball, no one thinks that it is big. It is not an ASA league.

I can remember when LL was using an 11 inch ball at 12U and the bigger girls were throwing it around like a baseball. LOL

But, then, I can also remember when everyone pitched from 40 feet and used a 12 inch ball. It is a wonder that we learned to play at all. Now, even the base paths are shorter for the 8s and 10s.

Nor Cal ASA tournaments rules is 30ft pitching distance, 11" low compression ball.

My rec league uses 32ft for 8u. Ack... I get some line shots at I barely get out of the way at in rec, I'm thinking about getting a mask!

We do first have pitcher pitches 3 pitches, then coach comes in, pitches 4- number of strikes.

Second half, 'normal' pitching rules, but no walks. Balls reset to zero, inherit strikes, coach pitches normal, but batter is out if balls count reaches 4.

I am not finding a listing in my ASA manual, for 8U.

Amy - for ASA purposes, technically 8U is not an official designation for championship play and therefore the ASA rulebook doesn't mention divisions lower than 10U. However, most rec leagues in SoCal have local rules that sanction 10inch balls for 6U & 8U but will use 10" Worth RIF (reduction in force) Softdot safety balls.

I personally like the 7 & 8 YO newbie pitchers using the smaller 10inch ball because some of their hands are so tiny they can't grip the seams properly or have to have it deep in their palm to hold on to the larger 11inch ball.
