It is all part of deceleration to transfer energy into the fingers. I haven't noticed any tightening/tension issues. I suggest doing it as a drill from the "K" position mainly. Do a few from full motion and then just remove the focus......the "dead stopping" will stick with DD for a while without her focusing on it. You will see what I describe as the ball "zinging" out of her release.

Stupid question? Doesn't the act of trying to stop the hand right at release cause tension upstream to the whipping motion and thereby decreasing the internal rotation of the lower arm and hand? If not, I'm sure the timing of this drill has to be exact?

I'll try it myself and with DD this weekend.

Be careful JJ...If she is throwing a peel, one thing that you may encourage with the extensive focus on the rotation is early "behind the ball" and that could "leak" into her pitching mechanics .... unless she is solid on the pinky leads, IR release we all covet. If you ask me, this is where the roll over drop was born. Maintain IR and create the 12-6 spin by keeping the fingers rolling over the ball a split second longer than the typical release which creates the 1-7 (catchers vantage point) of the fastball. I think the name "Roll Over Drop" or "Turn Over Drop" is misleading by the nature of the name.....and the way I am seeing it typically taught. I giggle to myself every time I see a pitcher learning this pitch. They force the hand to do some sort of cockeyed downward finish....when clearly, the ball is gone. My interpretation of this pitch is the ball is still thrown the same as an IR fastball. but the FINGERS redirect the spin to 12-6 instead of falling off early creating the 11-7. The rest of the mechanics should be pretty consistant with the fastball. I have watched a ton of Cat's video and to be honest...it's really difficult to determine which pitch she's actually throwing....because the variations in her machanics to modify the spin on the ball are incredibly subtle.

My own learning experience came after purchasing my own Rev Fire 8 months ago.... it was abundantly apparent to me that there was an issue with the typical mindset. Her FB was registering 18-19 RPS..and when she threw a roll over drop...it was only 14-15. She had the pronounced downward finish, but she lost revs and MPH. I learned after futile attempts to get her to ROLL OVER harder.....Snap it down. FINALLY I.....yes I, got so frustrated....I just told her to forget about what your hand does after you throw the ball... just use your fingers to spin the ball so the tape on the ball is on the line with the power line ...... bang....18-19 RPS drop ball. She still struggles with it as far as control....so it's a pitch she only uses against better hitters, or a waste pitch when ahead in the count......but she continues to get closer and closer to learing to control it.

Once again.... not an expert here...just sharing some info I learned through trial and error.

Interesting. How does one adjust the IR 1-7 cut release to a 12-6 peel? I mean is there a finger pressure or grip difference, or is one expected to just feel the thumb on the ball longer? Seems unreliable to me, as a layman. My kid struggles with rolling it over to that 10-4 slow spin, fat and ugly too. Nice post.

i agree. my DD seems to get challenged more when she sees some hard numbers. I did try a radar gun before, but the accuracy was so-so. DD used the rev-fire once before and her spins was on the slow side 11-12, but that was a year ago when she first converted from HE to IR. hopefully she's up to 18-20 now. we'll see next week.

Just a general thought...The IR release, although FAR more advantagous, is far less "reliable" than the hand behind the ball push, for obvious mechanical reasons.....but it nets a far more explosive release....but you need to put the time in to make it reliable. That's why the kids that throw the ball hard at a young age, often struggle with control. It takes tens of thousands of repetitions for them to be consistant.....but when they do....look out. As for the drop, with IR mechanics, I can only share what I did with my own daughter in a bit more detail. With a ball taped across the 4 seams, I have her hold the ball starting with her 4 seam FB grip and slow motion, mimic the IR release, but she'll need to start the release, or rotation of the lower arm just a hair earlier, so instead of the fingers rolling off the ball with that semi spiral release, they rotate off the ball a split second later in the rotation, but earlier in the sequence, or arm circle, which creates the feeling of rolling the ball over..end over end, while still finishing the rotation of the lower arm. Sounds incredibly difficult, but she did it at about 25% speed from a k drill to learn what that feels like. A queue I gave her was that she should feel the ball release off the middle of her Middle Finger, instead of off the thumb side of her index finger, and she needs to snap her fingers upward as her wrist is rolling over. The other thing I noticed is it helped her to stay open a bit longer in the sequence.

Like I said....this is what I am doing.....not sure if it's right or wrong, but I have yet to find an explanation of exactly what happens during the release to compare, and it's working with DD.......so far.
