Has anyone ever used the "Ball Coach" version of the pocket radar? I was intending on picking up the original version but I'm thinking that the added feature of constant read of the ball coach version is worth the extra $100.

If it works, yes, it's very much worth it because timing with the original pocket radar isn't always easy but the price is right...I also like the idea of mounting it on a tripod and letting it record 25 pitches deep. If you buy one let us know what you think.

I bit the bullet and spent the extra $100 on the Ball Coach version. I just KNEW if I bought the original version..i'd be kicking myself. Had DD throw 2 sessions with it so far and it seems to be SPOT on with what I would have expected. Took it to a Middle School game today as I wanted to see a couple of the girls on my travel team play (DD still too young). Had a great spot about 20 feet behind the backstop and took a bunch of readings. Seemed right on and I got Zero false readings. Both pitchers fastballs were all reading very consistantly.

I'll take a video of DD's next outside workout to demo how easy it is to set up on a tripod and evaluate a pitching session from the bucket :)

Ball Coach version seems way more user friendly. I have the classic version and I HATE that thing. I rarely get a correct reading so I never use the thing. Wish Pocket Radar had an option to "upgrade" the classic to the ball coach version

I also have the original model. Its very inconsistent.
Does it need to be calibrated once in a while? If so, would the tuning forks work?

Yep, yep, and yep !

Anyone want to buy the original version? It's a replacement unit and almost new.
I opened it and used it at one practice for about 5 pitches and realized that it performed the same as the one that I just returned. Sure it's user error, but since I'm the user it doesn't do me a lot of good and sits in the garage now.

Actually, they do have an upgrade option. It'll still cost you out of pocket, but there's a $100 trade-up program in place. You return your old one and they'll credit you $100. There was also a $30 discount floating around but I'm not sure if that's still in place. But I think I'm about to find out.

Here's a link to the Trade-up Program: Pocket Radar

I agree. Getting a good reading was more an art than a science with the original version. Looks like the new version requires no skill at all, which I prefer. :)

Update: there is an addition $30 discount out there. I received the code in an email, probably because I said it was ok for them to email me with product info. I think it's good through 5/6/2014.
