I want to pose a question to the board regarding arm whip and brush interference. As i understand it, arm whip is the forearm rotating independently of the upper arm/humerous without coming into contact with the body and brush interference is when the arm comes in contact with the body/leg on its way through the release. My question is......how can true arm whip and brush intereference occur at the same time? Is my understanding of the aforementioned things not accurate or is it more of a "style" way of pitching? I know there have been several threads pertaining to brush interference but i dont remember a discussion in the comparison between true arm whip and brush interference. Please tell me if i am totally nuts for posing this question but it "hit me" when i was looking at some old pitching videos of my DD. Seems like she had more arm whip about 6-7 months ago and now it seems like she has less arm whip but more brush interference now. Just curious what everyone thinks.......

Arm whip does involve a small level of brush. If posture is decent, the inside of the forearm... just below the elbow will lightly brush the hip. It's not an anchor around the hip, but a brush against it. Hope that helps.

I say the KEY is the posture.

Also, sure seems at times that Ueno anchors around the hip. But then again, she's unique.

Never teach a kid to use brush interference. It's something she will do on her own when she's ready. Nothing good ever comes of teaching this.

It's not just Ueno, Cat anchors pretty good too. Sarah Pauley does more than the word brush implies also. Here is a link to Cat's blog notice her choice of words. " if I HIT my hip wrong". Interesting choice of words. It implies that in her mind there is a good HIT and a bad HIT. I think there are many great pitchers that do more than a brush. And it does not counteract the whip. It helps stabilize and trigger the release. As for teaching it, I have no idea how or when to do this. I tend to agree with SS though. I can see teaching this possibly creating a lot of problems in a younger pitcher.

Interesting points JJ. Thanks for the blog link.

As a note, my DD has never heard the words brush interference in her life. This is something we have never discussed nor have i tried to get her to achieve it.....

Of course, I don't see anything taboo about using the terminology "brush interference," but we refer to it as a product of good mechanics.
