Hello fellow softball community,

My friend and I have decided to convert our DD to I/R after in-depth reading of the classroom post as well as others. My DD just turn 14 and the other pitcher is 13 so I believe we can convert our DD to I/R with the help of this great community. I will be posting our video progress soon so I appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.

This is what's best for their future success...however at 13 &14 yr old girls... you have one hell of a steep hill to climb. Be prepared to have your patience tested to the max!

Thank you both..James before I made this move I had to make sure my DD was buying into the change. So we discuss the pros and cons and she felt in the long run it would make her a better pitcher. She is just starting HS so we made our goal of her Sophomore year.

I am very surprised my daughter picked up the I/R delivery method quickly in less than a week. In the very beginning of her pitching career my DD pitched similar to I/R naturally but all previous PC taught her hello elbow method. Well yesterday my daughter went to her 1st lesson with new PC. This new P/C pitched in college but teaches hello elbow method but she very open minded working with me to teach my DD I/R. Well to my surprise my daughter after just 1 week and 2nd time pitching at full speed was nailing strikes and the fastest I have ever seen her pitch. Her new PC was amazed how the delivery system worked and I was actually the teacher yesterday. After explaining to her PC the PC caught on and helped me a lot. I am pretty much use the PC as a way to get my point across to my DD and it worked. I provided this site to the PC and she agreed to study to help me. I may have PC I/R converter in the making :)

this is sage advice to all parents out there.

introducing new concepts through a "teacher" vs coming from mom or dad directly can really ease the learning process a lot - depending upon the personalities involved. In my case, my DD will exhibit *waaaaay* less frustration when working on something new the first time with a PC vs me. She will take in the advice and remain patient while she learns to implement. After PC session I'll work with her on the same concepts and things usually go famously. But if I'm the one to introduce new things initially, frustration/tantrums ensue, and practice session will commonly end in tears. (My DD just turned 10) YMMV...

Had a chance to work with an 18y/o yesterday who had been taught HE. She started playing in HS on a very weak team. Her SR year, just finished, she was their only P on varsity. She told me that her elbow, bicep, shoulder and neck hurt so bad once that she had to see the Trainer. So yesterday I showed her I/R, at the end of the session she told me that it felt so much smoother and easier to pitch, she picked up some speed too just because of proper mechanics.
To the OP I converted my DD to I/R between MS and HS right after the summer season was finished. She was fully comfortable with I/R by the end of the fall season. Good luck they might just surprise you how quickly they pick it up.

How did you start and what were your key focal points? What advice would you give a guy who is going to do this? I don't see it as a major change. Based on my limited understanding, it is more a matter of stopping the elbow at the hip, whipping the arm, and letting the throwing arm go where it would naturally go (as opposed to forcing the HE). Am I on hte right track?

I followed the Board Members " lock it in" drill which is working great. The next thing I thought on my own for my DD to understand the top arm down during delivery was to put padding on her hip and have her do full circle rotations and slapping straight down to side hip. She started to feel no matter how fast she does an arm circle she must stop her top arm close to her side. Another thing I did so she can understand the force she should feel I had her sway her arm back and forth like the board members video just without the bat.

MY DD could feel the power from her forearm to her finger. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. With TB season in full swing I'm not going to do anything drastic....I've just been telling her to concentrate on whipping her arm and letting it finish naturally. We'll get serious about IR after the season.

It's kind if interesting....I was talking to her Jr High coach (who was a pretty good pitcher back in HS), and we were talking about how much hard work it takes to be a decent pitcher. I had seen her pitch BP to the girls in practice and noticed she pitched using IR. I wanted to ask her to work with my DD, but a head coach has lots of other kids to worry about, so I didn't bother her. Oddly enough, we were having a similar conversation on a later date and I was talking about my DD's PC. The jr High coach (who uses IR) told me she taught her self to pitch and had never had a lesson. I guess it just goes to show that IR is the natural way to pitch.
