After speaking to many DI coaches, I've come to believe that speed is overrated to a certain extent. As most coaches and folks on this site know, pitch speeds as displayed on ESPN are inflated by 3-5 mph. Van Studemann will tell you that when Kelsi Dunne arrived at Alabama she topped out at 58 on the gun. What she did have was great control and spin/movement. She was able to add speed and become the best pitcher in Tide history. When I played baseball, I could always adjust and hit speed. What I had problems with was location and movement. I'm sure it's not much different in FP softball.

Yea but like you said Kelsi was a tremendous talent with a ton of ball control. Most of the coaches I have spoken with over the years at the Pennsbury showcase/camp are looking for 60plus before they look even further. If you are throwing the ball less then that you better make the ball disappear with movement

I am seeing the bell curve for mid-D1 as 57-63. If you are in that bell and have movement you can be considered for mid D-1.

I think the big D-1s start skimming at 63 n up, again with movement.

There are a ton of pitchers in the 57-63 bell if ya ask me, and many want to go to those great D-2's out there. Then I have only seen the sub 56-ers go for the D3.

(WARNING - there could be an upper Midwest factor in play here)
