I first used this drill with my 2 dds the drill is excellent for getting the hitter to extension.

Tewks asked this question before, and never received a decent answer IMO ... the question is, how important is it to get to extension?

Is extension something that should be taught, or is it more the result of doing something correct earlier in the swing sequence? If it is a 'result', then shouldn't the focus be on what is causing that result?

Is extension a function of pitch location ... as in 'inside' versus 'outside'? Is there an expectation of full extension for inside pitches?

This is an excellent drill!! I showed by daughter this drill last year and she automaticly started getting her hips through better and a much better follow through. She started swinging through the ball with more power, instead of just at the ball. I think too many young girls (and boys) tend to grip the bat too tight..especially top hand. Gripping too tight tenses up all muscles and reduces power and follow through.

SBdad: Excellent point. Grip is what we found to be the root cause. Fix the grip and then let them know what finish should look like and they will not roll the wrists and have a weak hit.

Extension is the EFFECT of a good swing, not the CAUSE of a good swing.

A lack of extension is usually the result of a problem upstream.

This drill may work, but because it's basically a one-arm swing, which forces you to power the swing with the body and not the arms. The improved extension is the result of the improved use of the large muscles of the body.

To me, it seems important to let them feel what it's like when they aren't over-gripping and the hands aren't "fighting each other" at the point of contact. As Chris said too, they start to learn how to use their body to create a whip as well rather than a push.

I believe the better extension with this drill is because the top hand arm is not holding the bat and therefore the bottom hand arm is able to extend because it is not restricted by the top arm.

The bottom arm can extend farther than the top arm. If the top hand is not released from the bat the bottom arm has to fold or roll sooner.

Same extension that one gets by releasing the top hand after contact.

What is your opinion of top-hand release by the way?
