the old timers definitely have flatter swings and some DBSF in their swing on low pitches (Williams too). I think their swings were geared more towards high pitches because the zone was higher than.
it is still different than the passive DBSF you see in kids though, they don't just lay the bat back and then swing.
the drop the hands and tilt less but they don't lay back the bat, the hands basically drop with the bat vertical and then the bat turns from there. barrel angleand shoulder angle is definitely flatter though.
So I know a girl. Her swing looks like Gehrig's check swing. Barrel flattens, hands so far back she has a front arm bar. Kind of drives us nuts (myself and dd). What really drives us crazy is she hits pretty well. Like several doubles and some dingers...I am talking vs Bandits, Firecrackers, Intensity and etc. It does give me a little chuckle though, even if she never played for me, I would spot the barrel flatten and know to throw her up in the zone. I haven't seen a coach that figured it out consistantly yet.
