CB ... my first hitting session with a new hitter is an evaluation session also. Only difference is that I don't give any instruction during the evaluation. Why? I'm looking at the kid's swing and movement pattern. I'm trying to see where they are at and sum up a plan to get them where I want them. The second part of the first session will be a review of some basic drills with an explanation of the intent. In follow up sessions we get to work.

I understand but the young lady had never pitched a ball at all. So, there is that. They really thought that I could just let her be a pitcher when she didn't know the basic windup at all. In the hitting aspect, I don't give any instruction at all.

Got it.

Educating a kid on the work ethic needed to make it as a pitcher is important. Many newbies don't have a clue. The majority of folks can be filtered out simply by describing the effort involved.

That's what did it for us at the start. In her first season (8U), I steered Maddie away from wanting to be a pitcher because of all the extra work required. A few months later, stupid me asked her if she wanted to try being a catcher.

I had a parent once come up to me after a game and tell me to tell the kids to and I quote "Aim the line drives away from the fielders". I asked him if he was serious. He was dead serious.

I think I posted this a couple of weeks ago. BB and I are giving lessons. So, word gets out and there is a friend of a friend. They want an honest evaluation of their dd. I agree but tell them I don't have a time open and so, they would have to fill in if a player cancels or goes to a tournament. That wasn't good enough. So, I agree to give an hour long lesson at the end of my day which means just before dark. Long story short, it was an evaluation of this young lady pitching and hitting. (I told them I was not a pitching coach but, again, that was not good enough.) For one hour I was the most miserable person on this planet. Everything I asked this young lady to do was questioned. I spent more time talking than instructing and the young lady was not getting any reps in so I could really evaluate her. One example was that I asked this young lady to do the adduction drill that some talk about on this site. The parents wanted to know why I wasn't allowing their dd to wind up. I told them time and time again, it is an evaluation. When we finished, the parents didn't think that they got their money's worth since I didn't coach their dd to be some kind of star. Mom was really not nice. I told them that it was free as with all players I do an evaluation with. They have not been back and I'm not upset. This young lady is 8.

How do you live with yourself. You are a hitting coach and can't get an 8 year old to throw 5 pitches in the mid 50's in an hour? :)

canyonjoe, it wasn't just that I couldn't get her to throw in the mid 50s but that I couldn't get her to hit that pitch after she threw it.
