Is one better than the other in regards to batting. "Everyone" tells my daughter to stride when she's batting. She thinks it feels weird. She prefers to do a pick up and put down type of move. But, a batting coach said she's losing power doing that. Is one better than the other?

That's funny since coaches tell my daughter NOT to stride.

Whether to stride or not is a matter of style. What's important is hip drive. Or maybe there's a better word for it. But if all you do is pick up the front foot and put it down, then spin the hips, then you surely will not maximize power. Key is what the hips do, not the front foot.

Its a style or preference. IDK if one is better than the other, but I do believe the bottom line here is whether she's getting her body weight transferred or not? That is what's important here. So, I really don't care how she does it, but I'll look for a weight shift, compact swing, and a firm front leg. If these three things are accomplished at a minimum...I don't mess with her a whole lot.

Coach james pretty much nailed it. I witnessed it during a tryout my dd attended. The girls that did not shift their weight forward could hit it to the grass. The girls who did shift their weight forward could hit it to the fence.

stride

Does she stride when she throws? Of course. I personally think a stride can help younger players with their sequence and with better use of the lower half. DD thought it felt weird until we tied it in with how she throws. We'd throw from her batting stance and then throw bats.

I would only add here to observe whether her head "bobs" up and down as the leg is raised and lowered. If the head is changing planes much, a quieter stride might have a positive effect on that.

In all of the best hitters it is a pick up and put down. The idea of striding out with the front leg is for the most part bogus. I call it "a move out". They are NOT reaching out with there front leg. The "striders" gather up the front leg in a way…..and the whole body moves out. The rear leg moves itself, the torso, and the front leg out.
AND if someone is telling you to weight shift with the stride, turn on the mute button. The weight shifts with the swing, not before the swing.
