I could probably still swing down, if I tried. We were taught that a ground ball had more chance of being bobbled, than a fly ball. I haven't taught it, in 10 years, though.

The thing is ... my hitters can hit a hard grounder for a 'hit and run' without swinging down. You don't need to "swing down" to hit grounders.

Round ball, round bat.... if she swings downward and is a touch early... contact will be on the bottom of the ball.
Focus more on bat lag, lengthening the hitting zone and throw the bat head through the ball, with the knocking knuckles lined up, and the bat grip is in her fingers, not deep in her palms.

Fiveframeswing,
Explain your reason for not lining up the knuckles.
I could probably rant for an hour with examples as to why I teach this... However, I will listen to any reasonable theory.

Because it is not the lining up of the knuckles that is important. I'd be much more concerned with the alignment of the forearms.

Lining up the door knocking knuckles is pretty old school IMO. Some pros do that ... many don't.

I agree about the forearms (keeping the "V") and separation at contact, elbow above the hands above the barrel etc... but isn't that all easier with aligned knuckles? And the whip of the barrel is faster too because the wrists are loose with more flexibility.

No, aligning the knocking knuckles of the top and bottom hand does not make things necessarily easier. For some it makes things more difficult. As for the whip of the barrel being faster with the knocking knuckles lined up ..... that is simply not true.

What you are promoting in terms of knocking knuckle alignment is an old-school mentality. Yes, there are some pros that will do that, but many don't.
