A stride can help a batter keep their weight back, but it adds another element to the timing of the swing, which can vary based on pitching. The stride has to occur much quicker against a 65 MPH pitcher vs. a 50 MPH pitcher...therefore, I am a fan of the KISS principle.

I feel like it's more than a timing mechanism. For some players they need it, or at least it helps, to generate power. I feel like there is a little too much desire for less movement in softball swings. I see serious players moving up in age, 12U and beyond, and joining more serious programs, who have a very quiet swing. Sometimes they, their coach, and/or parent feel like it's a magic bullet to hit better pitching. But the defenses also get a lot better. You have to drive the ball, or you are out, unless you have truly exceptional speed. So some of these kids have swings that are mechanically not bad, they just can't generate much using that style. And they are terrified to introduce movement.

DD is amexdexrties, for some reason she wants to hit ball over fence when she bats righty. Her timing is all messed up IMO batting righty, thus no stride.

Lefty in practice she has a nice quite step, not sure how to describe it.

DD just slowly went to this no stride thing. She said it helps her with the timing of different pitches.
