Except there is no rule which provides for an umpire to call a batter out for throwing the bat, unless the bat actually interferes in a play. Some rule sets allow for a restriction to the bench after a warning but none have an out ruling just for throwing the bat.

We had it called this summer. One of our girls all of the sudden started throwing her bat. She was warned in her first AB for hitting the catcher with the bat and then in her 2nd AB was called out. It was a big call at the time because she hit a double on the play and we were in the middle of a rally. 2 outs at the time so it ended the inning

Should have used that magic word "PROTEST". If the umpire feels it is a safety issue, they can eject a player for unsportsmanlike conduct, but there is still no rule provision for calling an out unless as I stated the thrown bat actually interferes with a defender.

Comp, I'd like to have you on speed dial and available for all games. You tend to clarify a lot of rules for me and i think it would come in handy to "have you in my back pocket" during the season

Theres an idea for a new business venture. Monthly subscription for telephone rules clarifications. LOL

I was thinking of an app for your phone. Query they app before the protest. Comp takes a small percentage if you win the protest. :)

It was a rule in our local Rec league. First offense either team was a warning. Second offense either team was a out. OP never said if it was Rec or not.

First and only time i have ever seen it called. that's including close to 30 years behind the dish where by feet and shin guards were hit numerous times by errant bats

It would be impossible to cover every rule missguided local rec leagues add to their rules, not to mention each and every one is going to be different. They all claim they want the kids to learn the game, but then come up with rules that are contrary to the actual rules. If they want the kids to learn, just play the rules of the game.

Rec but I was told she got a warning during a MS game though I'm not sure which rules they follow there.

We played in a game last weekend. The ump called a player on the other team out for throwing the bat. The coach challenged the ump and said there was no rule in the rulebook for throwing the bat. The ump said it was umpire discretion. Our coach said exactly what you said, he could have ejected the player for unsportsmanlike conduct but at 10u just calling the player out seems more logical than an ejection for throwing equipment.

Another umpire making up rules. Nowhere in the rule book is there any discretion given to the umpire to call a player out for throwing a bat.
