Already got some help via pm but thought I'd ask the rest of you gurus if there any good tools (Insider Bat or whatever that thing is called) or drills to use when one's primary swing flaw is casting the hands? When dd's swing goes south, she leads with the hands, her arms extend prior to contact and she hits a lot of routine grounders. Became more of a problem when she developed right hip/back pain and it seemed like she was no longer able to fire her hips (MRI was mostly good news - some wear and tear, needs some time off and then physical therapy to strenghten her core muscles). Bat speed went WAY down. I went down a rabbit hole last night and searched youtube videos for fixes to casting hands, and a couple seemed promising. One in particular (Dave madigan I believe) advised setting up a tee inside and DEEP in the plate (instead of out front like one would normally hit an inside pitch) and tell the batter to hit the ball hard up the middle. Impossible to do if you cast the hands since the ball is so close to the hitter's body. What do you think of that drill?

6 to 8 weeks before she picks up a bat so looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance!!

Are you sure your DD is 'casting' her hands because when you say this:

A hitter will have their hands 'leading' and the arms going into extension prior to contact. Of course dependent on the pitched ball. Inside pitch the hands and arms there won't be much extension prior going into contact.

I will add more....

Most definitely casting. Not just my opinion but the head of the org has used the word "casting." Watch the video. At the beginning the guy describes casting as leading with the hands instead of the hips. Or something along those lines. I might be messing up the terminology a bit.

Setting aside what I wrote about my dd's swing because I am probably not describing it correctly, and just assume a casting issue, what do you think of the video and the idea of keeping the bat on the shoulder? Any merit?

Well, the head of your org say's so, then it's much be casting.

You watch the video. Again if you have to.... that isn't what he said. I believe that is what he was recommending to fix 'casting'. Lead with the hips first and lay the bat on your shoulder. Pretty much recommending to take the hands out of the equation. Me...I would learn how to use the hands but, that just me.
This is 'casting':When the hands go out from the body towards the other batters box. Where the hitter loses their 'hinge angle'

Thanks. That's a MUCH better way of explaining dd's swing flaw than the words I chose. That's it in a nutshell.

Can you post a video of your DD's swing.
I am leaning more towards 'arm bar'

What is being shown is 'ARM BAR'....would be the full extension of the lead-arm prior to 'swing launch'. (Prior to STARTING the swing.
and the simple easy fix is this:
16ateu1.gif

Reminding, constantly, during drills to keep a slight bend in the bottom hand arm during the 'loading' of the swing prior to going into the swing.

But, I'm guessing without video. Hopefully someone else can be more help.

I'm with rdbass on this one. Without a video, all we can do is guess. But I have seen many people misinterpret arm bar as casting. It is also quite possible that there is some early casting due to an "around the body" type swing. But again, video would be needed to know for sure. Personally, I consider all good swings to have an element of casting. It just happens to be "casting with direction". As rd stated, learn how to use the hands properly and it isn't an issue. Good luck!

RD, what is the location for the first gif? Is it outside?
