What are your thoughts between the two? My DD uses the split grip. Said she feels she controls the bat better. Her 13u coach prefers "traditional". He doesn't care for split.
I think when the hands are separated, It takes a little of the whip of the bat away. Have you tried it yourself? I personally can feel the difference. However, if it is helping with bat control and getting more hits...I'd go for it.
A contact hitter who is looking for better control where the ball goes could benefit from a split grip. A batter with a full swing will lose a little power with a split grip.
JMHO. Split grip gives a hitter a better feel of how both hands work. It helps a hitter get the independent feeling of each hand as it 'turns the barrel to the ball'. Split grip helps a hitter learn to 'turn the barrel to the ball' easier during tee drills/soft toss to transition to live at bats.
I agree that a split grip reduces a bit of whip and speed. However, it does give the batter a touch more control. It's a 50-50....
Bottom line is, whatever makes the player more comfortable is best. If it ain't broke......
Thanks for the feedback. Was just curious. DD sent a one hopper to the fence and HC told her if she used a traditional grip it could have been a home run. Who knows if that's true.
DD switched to a split grip midway through last season and has really taken off with it. She doesn't get a ton of extra base hits but she gets on base more times than not (BA of 621)
