Something I do and anyone with access to a cage should be able to do this. Set up a bucket with a screen about 20' from home plate. Get a few buckets of balls and front toss them while sitting on the bucket. It doesn't put a lot of wear and tear on your body and the kids gets a lot of reps on a short period. Also gets them work on discriminating good and bad pitches, you can mix in change ups, simulate rise balls etc. I also do this and simulate game situations.

Something else I do is a game where I'll front toss to three kids and tell them they are down 0-1 and have to win the inning. We work on pitch selection during various counts and the three of them try to work as a team to beat me.

Hi,

I coach a 14U tb team and we just switched from machine to live in our winter workouts so that reduces their swings at practice quite a bit. How many swings away from practice would you like to have from your players? I was thinking 500 but not everyone has a bownet or tunnel at home so that might be too much. Thanks for your help!
Every even remotely serious softball player should own a bownet and a tee.

I am resurrecting this oldie. Of course you want quality swings. Quality drills. So how many times a week and how many swings per session should a 12U, 14U, 16U player hit for optimal results? This includes lessons, tee work, drills, front toss, machine, pregame and in game.

Optimal? Every day and until the hitter loses their ability to focus on every rep and/or gets physically tired to the point that their mechanics break down. The mental part (and physical to a lesser extent) of it will improve as they age.

Of course every day may not be feasible (for a variety of reasons). Something like 2 or 3 times a week plus whatever team hitting they do is reasonable. With my 13 YO we usually get about 4 buckets per session(100 balls). Sometimes if I think she needs a break from me she will just do tee work on her own. My 8 YO DS switch hits so with him maybe 50-75 swings per side 🤷🏽‍♂️ My 5 YO DD swings when he is in the mood 😂. He would rather play a baseball game in the front yard than hit in the backyard cage..
