How many of you use this drill or tool to help your batters stay compact and extend/finish? If you dont like this as a training tool, what is it you dont like about it?
I use it. Basically, for me it is a bottom hand only drill. But, it is fun. The kids have a blast. We do it into the fence and sometimes a tennis ball will go through or get stick in the backstop. (It doesn't take much to amuse us.)
I think its great, personally. It really can give the girls immediate feedback they can understand at any age and like you mentioned it really is fun. You almost forget your practicing softball when your doing it. I personally think this an under used drill, especially at the 12u and under stages.
I first learned about this about 2 years ago at a University if New Mexico camp my dd attended.
I hold the chuck it in my left hand, with a tennis ball in it. I'm in my normal hitting position. I fling the ball at the fence, net, or outfield. I want to "release" it down the middle.
Candrea had me demonstrate the drill once to a group of coaches. It was the first time I had ever down it. It took me 3 times to get the release right.
I just saw one the other day and thought of this site. This is where I heard about it.Wasn't sure how it was used. Now I know. This may help my DD who is having a big problem with the proper move/motion of the front arm. Will give it a try.I should have bought it.Oh well back to the store.
would love to see a video of this drill done correctly.. It would be a wonderfull dill for the girls to do on a coach shortage practice.. would be something a parent could understand and supervise...
