Default Looking for feedback-10U TB Swing

Hi everyone. This is my first post as I have been lost reading and absorbing the information and wealth of knowledge this place offers. I only wish I would have found this site earlier.

Maddy has been playing rec. ball since she was 7. Last summer she had a HC and we saw dramatic improvement in her power, especially for her size. We made the move to travel ball 3 months ago and she has improved in all aspects of playing the game, except her batting. Things we noticed: lack of load, lack of power and she wasn't keeping her hands inside. These are the things we have been focusing on the last two weeks. Here is a video from batting practice last night and any help or confirmation that we are on the right track would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks! Go Rockers #7

Can I ask what the hitting coach has been teaching? Is it a male or female? I am asking because it looks like, just in that one swing, that someone has taught her to "keep her shoulders level," take a level swing," "squish the bug," and "swing down on the ball." None of which are taught by the leading hitting coaches anymore.

    Can you take more video?

Out of curiosity and subject but what does male/female matter?
Not a hitting guru but it looks like her stance is too wide. Does she take lessons?

Because many of us females were taught to swing down on the ball. I taught it for a couple of decades and many women my age, continue to teach it.

Her hitting coach was an assistant college coach. She hasn't had a lesson in about a year. Maddy played rec. Ball this spring and she lost a lot of what she learned to poor coaching, imo. Most only teach linear hitting but don't even know it. And they have no clue about rotational. When we first started taking lessons (last summer) her HC took her swing and broke it down and built her up. I wish she still lived here because Maddy was crushing the ball. I swear if I hear one more person tell her to "squish the bug" I'm gonna scream. Her HC most definitely did not teach her to squish the bug, she would always tell Maddy how much she hated coaches teaching kids that. We are at a tournament now. I'll try to get better video. I want her to get back to where she was. :-)

Thank you so much for the feedback!!

Softball mom, I am glad that you have a decent knowledge of where your DD needs to be, as far as her hitting goes. Can you give us a general area of where you are and maybe someone here can recommend a HC? Once you get her hitting correctly, you are going to have to speak up and tell the coach, not to teach hitting with her. Or have her go to the "smile and nod your head." Poor thing, she has been told "do this, do that" and has had her natural swing coached out of her. Good luck and keep posting.

Funny you say that! We do tell her to nod and just do what we say. I had to tell them to stop making her stand in the back of the box. I just couldn't take it anymore. She had the most beautiful stance and swing and it's so frustrating to see her going backwards. We have to find a HC soon because it creates tension with us coaching her. We are in Central Kentucky. If anyone has any recommendations for a good rotational HC that would be great.

Have a kid with a swing containing many of these flaws. I would get the kid's swing repaired, only for the parents to bring the kid back saying that her swing reverted back to her old swing again. Turned out the parents where correct ... the kid would return with her old horrible swing ... I would repair it ... the kid would use it in games ... and then over time revert back to her old horrible swing again. The parent's excuse was that their child had a short-term memory issue and couldn't retain the information. To make a long story short ... it turned out that the parent was making one single adjustment to what I was teaching ... and that single adjustment had the kid completely returning to their old horrible swing. So ... you can farm out the job of coaching your child, but if instructed to do what you say, then there is no reason to believe that the swing wouldn't return to what you see above ..... after all, the kid is currently being instructed to do what you say, and result is what we see above.

The result you see above is only after two weeks of us saying is enough is enough and something has to be done because the coaches aren't "fixing" it and are always using timing as an excuse. When she was taking hitting lessond I said *nothing* because she was being instructed and results were being seen. Maybe I should have clarified what type of instruction she is receiving from the coaches; stand in the back of the box and swing early. This is not what she needs. My DD is sharp as a tack and I assure you her short term memory isn't faulty. I'm not making excuses for her, I am looking for help.

I am by no means a coach. I am however smart enough to educate myself enough to help out until we find someone more qualified, which is why I posted here.

Ha, ha. I bet they are having her swing a light bat, like a -12, too. Next, they will tell her to "choke up on the bat."
