What does down and ready supposed to look like? Reason I am asking, I have noticed when my daughter plays 2nd base, her down and ready looks different than what I see other girls doing.

This Auburn "hop" video gives you a good idea of what "down and ready" should look like at the end of the hop.

Your DD 'looks' to have already 'committed' to a ball. DD needs to do the Hop or creep up in a neutral non-committal position. Your DD needs to be able to react to a ball that can be hit right, left or right at her.

My DD plays 2nd for HS, and for comparison, this is her down and ready - and she does a set-step as well. (I haven't used my phone to upload a pic before, so fingers crossed that you don't end up with a pic of my dog.)

Everyone has their own unique down and ready stance.I would def say to the OP that she would be much quicker with lateral movement if she brought the back foot up with the front one and not down quite so low.

Crystal,

As another poster mentioned - is that her normal stance, even before the ball is hit? I can't see how that position would allow her to get any sort of jump on a ball hit to her left (b/w 1B and 2B). It looks like she would either have to first stand up, or rotate her right leg to mirror her left before she can even begin to push off / begin a lateral (sideways) movement.

Thanks,

Gags

I've been taught and believe that middle infielders do not want to be that far down. We only have our corners get very low when playing in because at that point you are almost playing goalie if you are in far enough. You are reacting. Elsewhere I am not a fan of starting so low. You have to go up, then laterally, then down again.
