When doing stats, who do you credit for the strikeout? Pitcher? or Catcher? I read somewhere that it is credited to both position, as long as it isn't a dropped third.

Whoever possesses the ball at the time of the out gets the putout. So that would generally be the catcher for a strikeout.

Not that it matters, but the concept of a 'putout' was important in the early rules of baseball. It was a major statistic that was kept in boxscores. You could find a player's putouts faster than home runs they hit. The idea was that batters and baserunners don't make outs. Rather, defensive players put them out, and to do so, they must catch the ball, or tag a runner, or tag a ball - all while possessing the ball. It's in that spirit that the third strike must be caught, so that the batter is ''put out.'' A pitch is no different than a pop fly. Gotta catch it. Then they invented the dropped-third-strike and infield-fly rules to prevent teams from exploiting the 'put out' rule.

That's my Cliff Claven contribution for the day.

Yes, the catcher gets the PO.

As a result, your top catcher should usually have the highest fielding percentage on your team. If she doesn't, that means she either makes a lot of errors (and/or PBs) or you have a real stud playing in your infield or outfield.

For each strikeout, pitcher is credited with a strikeout and catcher is credited with a put out.

However, D3K is scored as a strikeout for the pitcher, regardless whether the batter-runner is safe or out at first base. If the runner is safe, the catcher gets a passed ball. If the catcher successfully throws the runner out, the catcher is credited with an assist and the first baseman gets the put out.

Are you a pitcher's dad? jk

If the batter-runner is safe due to an error on a play that only required ordinary effort, it's reached on error. Otherwise, it's either a passed ball or wild pitch.

I referenced NCAA Scorekeeping manual:

PITCHING
14.27 Strikeout
14.27.1 The pitcher who throws the third strike to a batter is credited with the
strikeout, even if the batter reaches first base on a dropped third strike.
14.27.2 The official scorer determines whether it is scored as a strikeout-passed
ball or strikeout-wild pitch.
14.27.3 For all circumstances scored as strikeouts, see Rule 14.13.

BATTING
14.13 Strikeout
The batter is charged with a strikeout in the following situations:
14.13.1 When her third strike is caught by the catcher before striking the dirt.
14.13.2 On a dropped third strike, whether or not the batter-runner is safe at first
base.
14.13.3 When, with first base occupied and fewer than two outs in the inning,
she is put out on a dropped third strike because she cannot legally advance
to first base.
14.13.4 When the catcher catches a foul tip directly from the bat to the glove/mitt
on a third strike.
14.13.5 When a foul bunt on the third strike is not caught in the air.
14.13.6 When, with two strikes, the batter violates the time between pitches rule.
14.13.7 When the batter receives two strikes, a substitute batter is inserted and the
substitute batter strikes out. Both the plate appearance and the strikeout are
charged to the first batter and not the substitute batter. When after sharing a
turn at bat with more than one other batter, none of whom received more than
one strike, the final batter receives the strikeout.
