As with most coaching, there is a perception of what you consider good, bad, or indifferent. Howard is Howard. I stand behind what I said. I think he's an awesome innovator and has in fact reinvented the wheel. That wheel was grandpa and dad screaming to gator chomp the ball and most coaches ever since has came from those poor mechanics etc...
I'm sorry if your experience with him was a negative one. Just remember the base of what was taught and not so much as to how the message was delivered.

Yeah but tell that to the 12 year old who he just called fat...

I agree Kobota makes better and faster fielders, that is why I got the DVD's, learn his methods and drills then teach them without the comments like that.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of belittling the kids. As a father of two girls I'm very well aware of how easily they can get a negative self image. Mike Candrea was quoted once in saying when coaching girls, they must feel good about themselves first, before they will play good. Boys on the other hand need to play good to feel good about themselves.
Howard could take some notes in that regard.

Wow. I was one click away from putting DD in a clinic with this guy. I thought I better run over to DFP and see what's been said about him and came upon this thread. Glad I found it and saved myself the money and the frustration of telling this guy what I thought of him if he made a negative body image comment to my kid. Thanks!

I just hosted Howard. I heard not one word regarding body type. I was with him for a about 16 hours and had dinner with him. We had kids of all body types, all ages. Too slow, move like sasquatch, look like fire hydrant...are all part of his thing. he even hosted a FREE coaches clinic afterwards so we can learn the footwork for our kids.

He is rough, but not demeaning. All the kids walked away better.

We are brining him back again. This time with Hillhouse.

Howard's clinics are terrific. Thick skin is helpful but I think his antics are a bit overstated in this thread. He will make your kid better. If she doesn't want to be told that she can be much better you won't like it.

If you don't believe that telling a 12 year old girl that she moves like Sasquatch is demeaning or a veiled comment on body type then we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. Glad you have enjoyed his instruction.

I am sure the truth in this thread lies somewhere in the middle.

I'm working on finishing details of having Howard Kobata work with my daughter's team. I'll be around him for about 6 hours. I'll let you know my thoughts.

Howard won his national championship in the 90's using old school fundamentals. Look at the differences between his first DVD and his newer one's. He changed his technique after he was done coaching teams and switched to just clinics.
