If you don't get the out, then you have runners on the corners and zero or one out. Next pitch at 12U, you have runners on 2nd and 3rd with zero or one out.

If you get the out, you have a run in and one or two outs and nobody on.

Outs are precious. Take them when you are given them.

Obviously, if the game is tied or you are ahead by a run in the bottom of the last inning, the situation is different.

I agree outs are hard to come by, because assuming that most teams that a team plays will be as good or better than they are. So if not the bottom of last inning and I'm tied i am getting the out.

Another issue I see a lot is 1st and 3rd when you have a 3 or 4 run lead and teams either just let the runner steal 2nd or put a trick play on which rarely works and you end up 2nd and 3rd. If you have a good catcher and it's not some super fast runner on 1st, I think the right play is to throw through and get the runner. I hate to give up a run, but more often than not I see 2 runs wind up scoring.

The best situation on a U3K is the catcher tags the B-R. It helps immensely, especially at 12U, if the catcher anticipates U3K based on the count and pitch called (e.g. drop or change-up). Otherwise, the pitch caller may have to avoid calling those pitches in that situation.

With less than two outs a smart 1B will come down the line to take the throw, tag the runner and hold the runner at 3B. If the runner on 3B breaks for home before the tag is made, 1B should throw home for the out. With two outs catcher should make the throw to 1B at the bag for the 3rd out.
