This is my 12 year old DD's first year playing travel where all the girls are first year travel players. Her primary position is SS. Per her coach, she's has a great arm and glove, soft hands, and great awareness on the field.

We had a scrimmage game last weekend where his only critique was that he wanted her talking and communicating with every pitch. She had another game today where she really concentrated on communicating something on every pitch (mainly the outs). Her coach gave her the same comment after today's game, he wants her talking more.

She came to me asking what she should be calling out. I gave up coaching on the rec level and not sure what to tell her.

Looking for suggestions. I know the coach is looking for her to take more of a lead defensive role.

Any help would be appreciated.

how many outs, what the next play is ( check 3, go 1) (play at home) (basehit, we're going to 2nd base) ( forget the runner, get the out)...also call out what 1st and 3rd play is being run

"I've got the throw" "2 you're covering" "Corners you're crashing" "hit the cutoff." "Step on any base." 'Let's get one out." "This one's yours."

Sometimes it doesn't even need to make any sense. Encourage the pitcher, congratulate good plays, support your teammates.

Chatter "You go, big right hander! Sit her down. Rock and fire. out out out! Ball ball ball! Infield 7! (doesn't mean anything) Outfield deep! Outfield middle up! RF shallow! I've got anything in here." And so on.

Thanks everyone, that helps alot. We have a tournament this weekend so we're going to put these suggestions to good use.

Coaching rec ball for 7 years I really thought I knew quite a bit about the game. Now that we made the switch to FT Travel, I realize how little I really knew about the game.
