DD wanted to catch, and my wife was aghast at her sharing league issued helmet, so we bought her a starter gear set, Wilson EZ gear, with velcro shin guards. hate the velcro, keeps coming undone, cannot seem to get knee savers to work with the velcro straps, etc.

want to convert to old school "clips" (not certain of correct wording), basically D ring on one side with a an elastic strap on the other with a clip at the end. anyone ever tried something like this?

would basically cutoff velcro on the one side, remove straps with other part of velcro from split ring on the other. on side velcro was cut off, will drill small holes, and pop rivet the d rings on.

major sticking point is where to find the d rings with a strapon on them to allow me to pop rivet to the guards?

any ideas?

What's your time worth to you? It would be far easier, less time consuming and probably cost you only a few dollars more to just purchase a new set of shin-guards. Heck, Amazon has them starting at $40 a set and some are even less expensive than that.

Just the replacement straps are $20.50 for a bag of 6 and you'd need 2 bags or you can purchase them separately for $4 each. The D rings with the nylon tabs attached run close to $4 each per one side and $5 a piece for the paracord rings on the other. So think of it this way straps...minimum of 8 x $4 =32. a set of D rings will cost you $9 per strap. That's an additional $72. You can buy a pretty decent set of new shin guards for $104 dollars.

The only other option you'd have to save money would be to actually buy the D-rings, paracord rings and nylon strapping separately and sew them yourself. Even then your still spending approximately $40 plus the $32 for straps. So again, how much is your time worth to you?

Cheapest costwise is to buy used from a catcher who has outgrown theirs.

I agree. However, the OP posted DW was "aghast" using shared equipment and I assumed she had the same feelings about used equipment so I offered my 2 cents. I could be wrong but I know my DD would not be happy with used equipment worn by someone else...especially a helmet. That said, leg guards would be different story since they would be worn over pants. That is unless the patellar padding was worn out;)

Helmets are one thing, but shin guards are another. They outgrow stuff quick when they're young. Use the savings to get a copy of the $40 NECC catching video and you're way ahead of the game. Regardless of age/size, IMO you should get them their own set of gear when they commit to being a catcher rather than a girl who catches.

will look for used ones, DW only objection really was shared helmet (we have had lice come home from schools before, so she is paranoid here), your right, probably not worth the money. they were fairly inexepnsive shin guards to begin with, I just hate seeing things go to waste, and I cannot in good consience even give them away.

Thanks All.
