Can someone explain the difference between ASA team and ASA individual insurance? Does anyone know the cost of each? The pros and cons of each?

What if I have a team of players who each have ASA individual insurance and I use a pickup player who does not have ASA insurance. Is she covered?

What are the pros and cons of difference insurances that are out there?

Individual insurance covers the individual and team covers the team. The individual follows the player, where the team is just for that team, but also includes coaches and, I think, scorekeepers. Individual is part of the registration so that amount may vary by state/metro association.

Thanks, MTR. Sounds like you're saying teams have a choice to get team insurance or do it individually. I've been on the site, but haven't found it easy to find answers. ... I found the cost of indiv insurance ($23 or $37, depending on the deductible). Can't find it for team. Also want to know if team insurance would cover pick-up players who are not individually insured.

If you have registered your team as individual players and then add a pickup, you have to go in and add her as an individual, print an invoice and pay it.

Many of the ASA Associations push for individual registration. Plus you get a player photo ID card which is required to play in our State Tournament. (although I have experienced that it depends on who you are come tournament time.)

Roughly how much is the ASA team insurance, and does it cover pickup players?

From Illinois ASA
How to register your Illinois ASA Youth team and get ASA Insurance:

Starting December 6th, go to www.registerasa.com and individually register your players and coaches.
Benefits of the Individual Registration for Youth Teams

Picture ID Card
On average without individual registration costs teams over $200. $40.00 Team Registration + $167 Team Insurance (Average Policy) = $207.00
Individual Registration covers both the registration and insurance needs and costs less = $14.00 per Individual (12 Players + 1 Coach) = $182.00
Each Player Receives a Photo ID Card
The Photo ID Card replaces the need for:

  • Birth Certificates
  • Picture ID’s
  • Insurance Policies
  • Proof of ASA Registration.
Each player gets 2 cards, one for the coach and one for the player.
No Picture ID Card
Cost Savings to Travel Teams ($103 per Team)
$40.00 Team Registration + $167 Team Insurance (Average Policy) = $207.00
Individual Registration = $8.00 per Individual (12 Players + 1 Coach) = $104.00
Each Player Receives an ID Card (without picture) detailing that they are registered with ASA and their level of insurance.
Go to www.registerasa.com to complete individual registration.

You might need to check with your Association. . .I believe if you advance to nationals you may be required to purchase individual insurance.

Very good, thanks again. ... Sounds like it might vary quite a bit from state to state. I was quoted $23 for individual in Georgia. That might've been the policy + ASA registration. Not sure.

CB - I've been doing it in Georgia for years. Sign up the team, get individual insurance with the $250 deductible and make sure all your coaches are ACE certified with background checks. If you have any problems, contact Kim Hamilton or Katie Kay with Georgia ASA. They'll help you through it.

It covers you in any tournament - even non-ASA and is required for any ASA qualifier. If you need more help, just let me know.

Thanks, DL. ...

Why individual over team? Not doubting you, but I'm going to have to explain the differences to a travel organization that will be making these choices. Is it more expensive? Would it cover a pickup player?

Thanks again.

Choose team insurance if you have 5 or more teams in your organization and get the league rate of $97 for 12U & below/team and $141 for 14U & above/team. Otherwise you're money ahead with the individual.
