I have met many men on softball boards in the last 10 years (not face to face), but they will post about the fears that they have concerning their daughters, when they start dating. Anyway, I always say "The girls will not do anything that you didn't do." You can imagine the reaction that I get from the dad. But, I mean truthfully, 14 YO boys that are sexually active are sleeping with 14 YO girls. So, if boys are active, some girls have to be, too.

My softball coaches son had his GF pregnant when he was 15. (1972)

We still don't know the circumstances concerning the young lady in question. Perhaps she is the coaches kid.

I have been reading news article about a 27 YO man that was coaching softball and accused of having a relationship with a 14 YO. He was sentenced yesterday for 10-15 years in prison. The young lady became pregnant and the 2 concocted a plan to abort and dispose of the babies body. The baby was never found. The female has not been charged. (Neither were charged in the death of the baby.)

I googled "softball coach charged" and was amazed that pages of several different cases came up. But, the case I was searching for was just resolved yesterday. The young lady is now 19.

My DD is 12 YOA, and she knows that as soon as she gets pregnant her childhood is over. Between raising a child and going to school/work, there will be no time to play softball (or do any other fun stuff). My wife has made it VERY clear that she (wife) will NOT be raising her grandchild. My DD has a lot of plans for her future, so hopefully the "scared straight" approach will keep her on the right path. Time will tell.

This isn't a sexism issue, this is a safety issue. If the player (and her parents in this case) doesn't care enough about her baby to stop taking unnecessary risks to her baby, than someone else needs to stop her, for the OTHER players sakes. Not hers. The other players.

I played with a girl who hit a foul ball that hit a two day old baby. The baby died. It's been ten years. She's still incredibly messed up over that. Not her fault, but she still feels responsible.

The 'no sex' rule IS sexist, for the simple reason I doubt it would ever be instituted for boys.

Totally agree with you. If a player has a medical condition (pregnancy) and has been advised by her docitor to NOT play sports than she should not be allowed to play. But for a coach to put into a players "code of conduct" contract that she will not date or have sex is just plain ridiculous and impossible to enforce. Whether or not the team is a private organization or not, this type of language should never be part of a players contract. As long as the players attend practice, are good teammates, and play in the tournaments as scheduled, who really cares what they do with their time away from softball. At the end of the day, its just a game. Let's not micro manage their whole life.

amanda_cake - FYI, there are tons of boys private baseball travel teams in the U.S. and I have never heard of them signing contracts forbidding dating.

Oh, I know they are out there but just not in this part of VA!

My former team needed a contract saying that they wouldn't date each other. Just sayin'.... Amy
Too funny, but has been a problem for my Varsity team (I was on JV at the time so I didn't get to see how everything went down) and problems for other teams that I've heard about.

We just played in a 16u tourney this past weekend and found out after the fact that the opposing catcher was pregnant. A couple girls from my team over heard her in the bathroom after the game. We saw them the next day, Sunday, and they had her in right field. A parent from my team asked who we believed was her mother about it and it was confirmed - "3 months pregnant, but she loves the game".

Of course my wife and I have had the conversation with our daughters but honestly this wasn't even an issue I'd considered as a coach. Call me naive...

I don't want to sound like the moral police but both the pregnant girl and the boy who gets a girl pregnant make poor examples for other young people. Allowing life for them to go on as if everything is alright is sending a poor message out there. As parents of such children we want are children to succeed in life and will help them all we can but do we want to send the message that it is acceptable?
