DD is 2nd year 14u. We are starting the exposure tournament circuit.

One of the pitching coaches of one of our pitchers told her in an exposure tourney, she should only throw fastballs over the plate and not try to get fancy. He said college coaches want to see speed from the pitchers and lots of hits from the batters.

He went so far as to say the tournament directors will tell the umps to squeeze the strike zone to make sure pitchers have to throw over the plate.

DD pitches and she tells me it's really tough to throw right over the plate because she works so hard on not doing that most of the time.

Opinions? Is this what coaches want to see?

I can't claim to speak from experience, but wouldn't a pitching scout want to see pitchers stymieing good batters? And wouldn't a hitting scout want to see batters lighting up good pitchers?

Speaking as an umpire that has worked numerous showcase and exposure events, I have NEVER been asked to squeeze the zone.

I have been told to ignore illegal pitches, however......

Just when you think you have heard it all. There is zero truth to any of that. A showcase is just that. Players should Showcase what they can do. Pitchers get batters out.

If that were the case than Showcases would be coach pitch or machine pitch.

On top of all that it's dangerous.

I have played at colleges where batters start with 2-1 counts to Showcase the offense. My pitchers were definitely not grooving fastballs.

Not here.

Had a DD, hitter, non-pitcher that went to exposures she would agree with you and thank your DD.
If my DD was a pitcher she would say noooooo way and she would not do that. Aren't both hitter and pitcher looking for GOOD 'exposure'.

I may have heard worse advice before, but for the life of me I cannot remember when.

Every coaches wants/needs are different. Your daughter needs to show them what she can do. My husband is an umpire and he's never had someone ask him to squeeze the strike zone. Per my husband, the tighter the strike zone the less hits you'll see.

No, no, no. Period. Exposure is for all players, and it is still competition...who gets the best hit or biggest strikeout or best catch or double plays or beats a throw or has best attitude, etc. The pitching coach is WRONG, and I really hope someone says something.
