DD is Jan 11 and in our case January has not been an advantage. She has been a late bloomer and a date on a calendar cannot be a guaranteed competitive advantage.

On the flip side, my dd's late birthday hasn't felt like a disadvantage.

It is great parents-to-be are planning how to make their DD a great softball player.

Actually, for insurance reasons, the ob/gyn suggested that we induce labor for DD 3 in late December.
I disagreed for a number of reasons. For one it seemed wrong, for another I was working in Wisconsin while the family was in NYC, and I couldn't get any vacay until January. I went to NYC for 2 weeks, the second being paternity leave. To get the leave, DD 3 had to be born in the first week of January. She was born Jan 3, I think a Thursday. I don't know if we would've induced pregnancy if she hadn't popped out in time.

As an ex birth pro (doula and taught childbirth classes), I think you were wise. Doctors act like an induction is no biggie but it has some pretty serious risks. Worth it for medical reasons. Not so much for insurance or tax purposes.

/digression (sorry)

DD has a December birthday. When we first started travel ball, DW and I viewed this as a disadvantage because she was moving up as most of her classmates were staying down. Now looking back on it, I am glad it turned out like it did. DD was forced to play against older girls because her birthday dictated it, and DW and myself did not have the opportunity to hold her back. I think being one of the younger players on the field has helped her in the long run.

I totally agree. My DD has a Dec bday also and having to play with girls that are almost a year older has made her a better player. I look at some of her friends who stayed down in 8u (Early Jan bdays) and see how much more DD has improved not only in skill level but knowledge of the game.

My oldest DD was born in August of 01. She started school late so she is a freshman this year..... and she just made a 16-18 team!! Doesnt really matter when they are born, if they put in the work they will be successful.
