Another thread made me think to post this question.
DD's softball program always participates in 2 or 3 tournaments in the fall (HS season is in the spring)
DD is in the marching band in the fall, going to competitions every weekend with them. I know most of the other U18 kids play a fall sport or participate in an activity that wouldn't allow them to miss a weekend.

what do your kids do? participate in tournaments in the off season? If so, are they excused absences from fall activities? If they participated in Soccer tournaments during softball season, would that be excused? ( in our state, if a player misses a practice due to playing another sport, they are not allowed to play in the next game.)

Also being in school doesn't lend itself to playing softball all weekend, not to mention travel time.

what do you guys do?

For HS sports, they come first. If you choose to go to a club sport or activity over a HS sport you can be benched for up to 25% of the remaining season. In most cases this includes HS practices and games.
DD plays varsity soccer, her club softball coach both knows and encourages this. If she has to miss a game or two in a fall tournament that's the way it is. But come summer he expects all players at all tournaments and practices.

Some of the clubs in our area do not allow the girls to play any secondary sports, HS softball is the only exception.

We encourage the kids to play HS Sports, if they miss Saturday games for anything to do with HS so be it. Typically HS activities aren't the whole weekend and we get the kids on Sunday bracket games for local tournaments.

Just wait until the Graduation parties, and Graduation's align with the first couple of Tournaments Hahahahaha

obbay, we are in the same state. DD is starting HS this fall as well, so we're going to be in the same boat trying to navigate this. I think most clubs that have been around understand and abide the rules.

Here are the MIAA rules. http://www.miaa.net/gen/miaa_generated_bin/documents/basic_module/MIAAHandbook1517.pdf

They're pretty clear and strict on what is acceptable.

Rule 45. Loyalty to the High School Team: Bona Fide Team Members
A bona fide member of the school team is a student who is consistently present for, and
actively participates in, all high school team sessions (e.g. practices, tryouts,
competitions). Bona fide members of a school team are precluded from missing a high
school practice or competition in order to participate in a non-school athletic
activity/event in any sport recognized by the MIAA. Students cannot be given special
treatment (late arrival, early dismissal, etc.) for non-school athletic programs.

First Offense: Student-athlete is suspended for 25% of the season (see chart on Rule 62).
Second Offense: Student-athlete is suspended for an additional 25% of the season, and
is ineligible for tournament play immediately upon confirmation of the violation. See
Rule 98 for additional tournament restriction and Rule 88 for waiver guidelines.

I am finding with my daughter that the HS sport schedule is conflicting with some showcases that have good reputations. She's a junior this year and it's a pretty important time for recruiting and she definitely wants to play in college at the highest level she can. I know the showcase is only as good as having coaches of schools you are interested in coming to watch you because they know you will be there. But assuming that the coach has heard from DD and would be there if DD is there, then we are pretty disappointed to miss them. But we definitely feel that the HS commitment is more important. We are going to get to what we can for softball and try to make up for it other ways. Camps are really important and those also conflict a bunch this fall. It's hard.

Rule 40 is pretty clear and strict on what is acceptable out of season, especially:

40.4 A coach may not directly or indirectly require an athlete to participate in a sport or a training program outside of the MIAA defined sport season.

We just had our parent/athlete at the HS tonight for fall sports and they made sure to go over this multiple times for the new parents.
We're trying to schedule a college visit around fall softball and HS soccer and it's not going to be easy

I don't think our program director is on board with HS obligations (especially when it comes to marching band). From September thru the beginning if April, DD spends a minimum if 2hrs training every Sunday (planet faspitch, for those of you from the area). Program director not real keen on that either, because it's run by women (I'm serious). Funny attitude for a guy who coaches young women...

One of the reasons DD switched teams was because the old organization did not support secondary sports or HS activities. She's been to PFP for hitting lessons on and off over the years and has had lessons from some very knowledgable women there. Now I'm really curious who your DD plays for

Right Here For Now
I have 2 of my players out of 12 in marching band. I fully expect them to miss Friday night games. I'm pretty sure I'm clear on the 4 Saturdays as far as competitions go and Sundays our HS aren't aloud to have HS sponsored activities. Since they all want to play at the collegiate level, those are the only 2 that do anything outside of TB and HS SB
