Good question. As a huge college football fan who has followed recruiting closely since sites like Rivals and Scout started up I have no idea how anybody can put any relevance in these ratings. Football gets far more notoriety and press than softball and there is still a lot of disagreement about their ratings. To try to do this for softball with no real centralized system or writers in every state is complete conjecture.

I'd be pretty confident that it’s based on interviews with the heads of all the top organizations in the country, particularly the ones that play in the major nationals, like PGF, etc. Probably not based on watching them play and scouting. They might also talk w/ college coaches, but I don’t know rules on that.

If you’re talking the class of 2016 or 2017, then it’s not that hard to come up with a ‘decent’ list. If you just start with signees and commits from schools in the recent top 50, you’re down to 300-400 players right there.

Players that don’t play for the biggest org’s won’t be ranked as highly because their coaches don’t have the same credibility.

That is all you need to read. It is the best players on the teams that have national notoriety. I am sure many of those girls are the best players but there are many great players out there who never play for a nationally recognized organization. If you allow the coaches of the alleged "top" teams that play in the alleged "top" tourneys to have influence they will pick girls in those same organizations. Rating players by college commitments is the biggest way to lose credibility in college football recruiting. It might be a reasonably good way to look at it but in the end you are just rating the players who commit to the top teams. A recruiting site that truly evaluates will have a kid rated highly before they commit to a top team.

They explain the process on their website.

That's all well and good but I had several players on my team last year that I would put up there against many of those and they would not only give them some serious competition but they could possibly beat them out of their spots. However, we are a small, relatively new organization, that doesnt go and play huge tournaments nor have the credibility of the largest organizations out there.

I have livestreamed the Nationals of many of the ABC organizations that provide it. I have seen many of these players play at the top levels and I have to say, I've seen better players both locally and ftom my team that could compete, if not beat them out of their spots. So the question still remains, how can this be truly subjective? Obviously it can't. There are far too many players out there that never have the chance to be truly evaluated and properly recruited due to kack of organization name recognition, lack of funding, lack of the recruiting process knowledge, etc. etc.

Brent Eads and FloSoftball do a pretty nice job of covering Fastpitch. Any ranking like this will overlook deserving players. I think the point though is to recognize some of the top players in the country and all the girls that make their lists are pretty darn good. I figure at least someone is talking about our sport and promoting it.
