I posted about a great tryout that DD had yesterday where the HC took a lot of time to get to know all the girls, memorize names, joke around a little to break the ice, etc...

Tonight: different story. "Big name" org here in the hometown. There are 8 girls from the team there and 6 girls trying out. I completed a form in advance with all the pertinent info (desired positions and all the rest) and emailed it.

He runs the girls through a bunch of drills and all is well. At one point, he broke the "newbies" and the "vets" (his words) apart and worked with each. DD was in the outfield and he was yelling at her to change positions. Problem? He was calling her by entirely the wrong name (a few letters were the same, but entirely a different name). Had to ask AC her name. Now, I get that he doesn't know her, but he knew every other girl's name and had called them by it repeatedly. And by the way, he asked the AC her name again about 20 minutes later.

So, that was a little annoying, but we go through the entire workout and he never asks her to suit up (she's a catcher). For the scrimmage, he has a team member catch for one "team" and another "newbie" catch for the other team for all four innings. Never asks if there are any other pitchers or catchers. I mentioned to one AC that DD is a catcher, but nothing happens.

As he's letting everyone go, he pulls a piece of paper out of his bag and looks at it. He calls DD over and asks if her Mom had filled out the form. She said yes. He asked DD to have me fill it out again and email him. Then he turns and sees me. I ask him if he would like to see her catch. He looks at me, cocks his head, and says, "But isn't she a lefty?" I said yes and he just made a face.

He then quickly asked DD to get her gear on and tells her he'll get her pop time. He gives her zero time to warm up and has her throw 4 or 5. Before he let everyone go, he says (in front of everyone), "Susie, Jenny, Amber, I'd like to see you guys again for sure. Everyone else, I'll email you. Thanks for coming out."

Am I being thin-skinned? The whole thing felt rather rude/impersonal/crappy. It was so utterly obvious which girls he was interested in and that he had zero interest in the rest. He's a baseball guy and he seems to have an extremely high opinion of himself.

ETA: I suppose it's possible that HC could see this post and figure out who I am. If so, oh well. I just think he needs to understand the impression he is sending (I've heard rumblings and saw one of his current players at a tryout last night, so not everyone is happy).

Ugh - frustrating!
DD is a lefty catcher too. She is amazing (yes - I know I'm biased, but she is good).
This year she had 3 teams ask her to come play for them as a catcher "no tryout necessary" - so I think that speaks for itself.
However, there is one other coach that wants her and has asked her to come play for him for the past 2 years, but he will NOT let her catch because she is a lefty.
I can't stand coaches who automatically discount a kid without actually seeing them play.

Tryouts are hard. DD was asked back and decided to stay with her current team before tryout season started, but she decided to go to a couple other tryouts anyway.
We had a similar experience where the coach told her she was too small to catch so not to bother suiting up. What?!? Ok...

Be happy. That coach did you a favor. He showed you his true self right away, saving you the trouble of finding out later, when you're already committed, what he's really like. A lot of coaches love you when you're a prospect, then turn on you once you're on the team.

Now your daughter has the chance to find a team that's a better fit, where she can be happy and grow in the game.

Such a great point-of-view! Our DD went to several tryouts, and it didn't work out the way she thought (hoped) it would initially. We told her to keep the faith, everything happens for a reason. Made her listen to Garth - a little "Unanswered Prayers" from old school Mom. Couple days later and BAM, all is BETTER than she thought it would be and she's left thinking, "Man I'm glad I figured out the deal with that other team before I made a poor decision."

Yeah, I told her that this is a life lesson in terms of teaching what she DOESN'T want in a coach. She independently told me tonight that she would rather continue to play for a "B" team and actually play than play for an "A" team where the coach has no interest in her and she would probably sit the bench the majority of the season. I'm glad for her to figure that out on her own rather than me having to lecture her. She's tried out for 4 teams so far (several more to go), and now has a variety of experiences to compare. Life examples are so important. I'm glad we went (even though I suspected this tryout might go sideways somehow based on previous experience and the rumor mill).

Continue your search. Lefty catchers are an asset in this game.

Why is a lefty catcher viewed as an asset? I'm not trying to be snarky. I understand why a lefty 1B is an asset over the RH 1B in covering the hole and in general tag plays but I have a hard time understanding how a lefty catcher is a greater asset than a RH catcher when a majority of runners are on the rh side of the field and the majority of the batter are RH so throws are unimpeded when throwing to 1st of backdoor pickoff and throwing to 2nd on steals.

Ken is so right. The salesman types who will say anything then totally change when you're on the team... They're the worst. Good to know up front you don't like this guy.

I would like to know too. Also more throws to third than first. Only advantage I can see is that you are not limited yourself which would be a bigger issue at the lower levels where talent level is probably much wider..e.g. best athlete on the team (by far) may be a lefty and hence will play any position (including middle infield) much better than anybody else regardless of disadvantages induced by "handedness"
