Is it ok to tell a player that she was lucky to get a HR? This is my DDs best friend in the team, she is very athletic but very new to the sport. She has been struggling lately with the better competition but this past weekend she started doing better thats when she hit the HR. Then a strike out came that is when the coach called her to tell her that she was lucky to hit that HR and she have to do better. I dont get it confidence is one of the most important things for success in this sport and this comments to me are harmful in any teen mind. Am i been over dramatic or is this a commom practice in elite teems?

He could have said it a better.

Something like

Nice blast, if you want to hit more you need to work on this

They picked the Team and coach so they should know what they are in for.

Ohh bealive me i agree! This was one thing i told my DD before the season started if she was sure about playing in this team. My DD decided to stay cause she plays High school for him so she knows the good and the bad. Me personally i hate every time he start putting them down but who am i!!

Probably not the best thing to say, but it's hard to judge without knowing the player and coach, their relationship, their history, their personalities, the full context, etc.

Everybody girl is different, but as the saying goes: "Girls need to feel well to play". And she probably isn't feeling well after stupid comments like that.

Maybe he thought she was trying to hit a HR the time she struck out and this was his way of trying to get her to concentrate just on hitting and not trying to hit a HR. Some kids think that if they could hit it over the fence once then they should be able to do it all the time. You have to remind them to just hit the ball and if you hit it right then you can hit your HR.
He could have been said better in any event

1 no its not beneficial, and 2 no if you have a brand new player on the team its not an elite team.

Not unless it's the tail end of a conversation.

Coach: You need to stop doing "ABC" when you swing.

Player: I hit an HR last time didn't I.

Coach: You did, but you were lucky and ran into a change up.

We have this guy, keeping score for us now. He is just clueless as to how to talk to a child. Even the simplest comments come out of his mouth all wrong. Told a player (who now has left the team) after hitting a shot that rolled to the warning track on a multi-use field, that she scored on (HR), there was a play at the plate, not really close but it was a play. " Next time, hit it further." No congrats, Nothing. That child, left the team, the next week. There are more stories, but until this season is over, I have to keep my mouth shut.
