A recent discussion in another thread here; http://www.discussfastpitch.com/softball-rules-questions/28266-interference.html prompted me to make a post for those that weren't aware.

It's true that parents are recruited to call LL softball (and baseball games) and this is often viewed as a negative against the organization and perhaps another reason why "I'd rather have my kid playing tournament/select/travel ball because it's better 'quality'".

But its also the amazing thing about LL that so much volunteering allows so much softball and baseball to happen - - and for only $200-$300 per kid.

The parent umpire is only at the local/community level.

Once All Star play begins, no more parent volunteers. Actually all umpires are always volunteers--one of the trademarks of the LL organization--but we are only "invited" to officiate games based on competency and performance.

After the regular season the quality of umpiring excels from the District to State to Regional to the World Series finale.

I would put up District or State LL umpires against the best District or State umpires from any other Association.

I actually remember being pulled from the stands once to umpire a LL game, we had actually just moved to town and my son joined the local LL 13-14 boys and the umps did not show they asked if anyone had experience and I volunteered along with another dad and we did a pretty decent job considering I had to call the game from behind the pitchers mound

Our Rec league uses real umpires starting at 10u and up. And they are not volunteers, but actual paid umpires.

If you call a ball over the plate at the belt a strike, you have my undying gratitude and praise.

If you don't, you're just like every other POS I've seen this season that has no business being behind the plate - and that's at the rec, travel, HS, and college level.

Our rec league was like that, too. Some were good. Some...not so much.

I don't know how it is run now but back in the mid 90's I ump little league as a 13-15 year old and got paid. And the best of the best got to do regionals. I was one at 14.

Edit - I got paid for regionals. Have no idea who signed the check but I got $20 per game that year, which was a lot back then

I think it's important the distinction between Little League and what others are calling "Rec".

Some folks refer to LL as "Rec".

My reference to "rec" is generally for ASA-B or ASA-C recreational leagues which are common in my area. The are some leagues that operate under the Little League umbrella. I would also consider those as "rec".

I have heard people say they would get better umpires if they paid them more. The bottom line is that there are so many games between college, high school, rec and travel that there are simply not enough quality ones to go around, and paying a lot of them more would not change a thing. It would only lead to a higher level of pay for their incompetence. IMHO
