Georgia's state association approved bringing back slow pitch as a state championship sport starting next spring. Fastpitch is played in the fall.

Didn't think I'd ever see that. They abolished it in 2009 when they got down to about 20 teams. What I like about it is the fact that it's a sport that you don't have to play year-around to make. I think there's a need for that at some of these great big schools where you have to be an aspiring pro to actually to get to play varsity sports.

I wonder if it also will persuade some schools that have no real fast-pitch pitchers to skip fastpitch and just play slow pitch.

Makes me wonder how many states have slow pitch now.

As a Georgia girl this is interesting news indeed. I will look for more details. Wonder how quickly it will make it into the high schools. Also curious how many high schools will try to support both?

Back in the dark ages (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) that is what we played. I have pictures with the short-shorts and trucker hats to prove it! :) I'll spare all here. ;)

Do you have a link? I'd love to share this with others here locally!

It's a blurb in this story - GHSA approves spring football games beginning in 2017 | Prep Zone: High School Sports blog

GHSA will announce on its site eventually.

You said, ''Wonder how quickly it will make it into the high schools.'' ...

This is for high schools. The GHSA will hold a high school state championship for slowpitch in spring/2017.

I'll also be curious to see how many schools sponsor it.

I also wonder if some sneaky fast-pitch coach might not use it as extra fastpitch practice. Just practice like it's fastpitch to 10 weeks and show up for games with the intent of just having a good time.

I likely worded that poorly. I think my question was more focused on adoption rate - meaning - will my DD local HS have a team straight away.

Thanks for the link!

One of the reasons it died in 2009 was that schools didn't want to fund it. There's a state law that says you have to offer any sport in which college scholarships can be won, provided that enough students show an interest. Well, you had enough kids wanting to play, but the schools' attitude was that we've already got a fastpitch team, which fills the law requirement, so we're not going to pay for another coach to do slow pitch, etc. ... Hopefully enough schools will find value in it and support it.

The proposal was made from Savannah. So it makes me wonder if there is a growing rec slow-pitch rec program down there and a demand grew from it. From a rec department standpoint, slowpitch is a great sport. Unlike fastpitch, you aren't dependent on a trained pitcher. It's better for the masses than fastpitch.

While I love the idea of my DD getting to play slow pitch for "fun" in the Spring, I am not sure how it would fit with her TB schedule.
