I have coached for a very long time at both the HS and MS levels as well as TB. I've been the HC in 4 different sports. Let me tell you that to say that I disagree with everyone makes the team and every plays is an understatement.

I don't believe everyone is entitled to play.

After reading all of Slappinandstealin's posts, my views aren't that extreme. I would just say that if you have the resources to accommodate larger rosters (meaning enough space, coaches, etc.), then I see the value in having as many players as is practical for the sake of participation. I especially see the value for 'sports of a lifetime' like cross country, golf, tennis. The USTA (national tennis fed) once had an initiative that encouraged HS tennis programs not to cut tennis players and helped them financially to accommodate that. Obviously, this was the USTA's attempt to grow the game, but I supported the idea. Winning is a priority, and I don't think large rosters should interfere with the goal of trying to win at the varsity level. But if it can be done, then I have no issue with providing as many participation opportunities as is practical.

I have coached for a very long time at both the HS and MS levels as well as TB. I've been the HC in 4 different sports. Let me tell you that to say that I disagree with everyone makes the team and every plays is an understatement. There are a lot more things that go into it than what is being considered here in this thread. At one point, I attempted to get out of basketball but was then assigned to MS Girl's 7th Grade Basketball. We can be assigned a duty for a couple of years much like we can be assigned to be a class sponsor. So, the new MS AD came up with the idea that I had to keep 14 players and every player had to play in both halfs of the game with "significant minutes". Do you know what happens when you put the 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 players into a game? This AD pretty much destroyed the HS girl's basketball program. They were beaten so badly every game and no matter what, I couldn't do anything about it. No team we played played more than 7. The athletes didn't go out for 8th grade and HS basketball and they had a few years of no wins at the HS level. What about property values? Our school was a joke once upon a time and everyone not only beat us but beat us badly. The year before I came to this school, the school I was at beat this school 29-0 in baseball and didn't try to rub it in. So, when I got here, we turned things around. Our school district started booming and we had to build a new HS. We win at everything now. In my subdivision, we have 4 new houses and 2 started. Well, I could go on and on.

Yeah, my feeling about this is please don't put my kid on a team if you have no intention of playing her. Don't ask parents to pay the $$$, sacrifice the time it takes to transport back and forth to practice and games, and get the kid's hopes up if you know good and well she'll sit the bench all season. I understand it's different in college, but that's really too much to ask of a youngster. Only take her on the team if you intend for her to contribute. This is kind of the opposite of what you're saying, which I also agree with: don't take kids on the team as charity cases. If they don't have the skills, it's not the place for them. Like someone said before, that's what rec is for. If someone was really motivated, they could form a "developmental" league for these players, sort of like club teams in college. They compete, but not on a varsity level.

What does ETA and the frowny faces mean? Do you dislike boosters?Or is this some kind of reflection on my opinion?

Honestly, what do you think should happen in a small town with no rec ball for girls over age 12? What should happen when 15 girls go out for a team and 3 of them have never played? Cut the 3? Or try to teach them some ball and give them something to do?
I agree that a 50 person roster is impractical, but if it is possible, practical and feasible, why not keep everyone?
If the score is 20-3 why not put the inexperienced girls in?

I guess your school teams are just a lot better than ourss

It had nothing to do with your post. It had to do with how often Politics come into play in HS ball around my area and especially DD's HS team. I could tell you stories that would make your blood boil as mine does every time they get run ruled since the best 9 aren't on the field and they're playing teams that do have them out there. FYI DD starts so that has nothing to do with what I just stated.
