I'm looking for a little help has anyone ever had an issue with a team NOT having team insurance to cover players. I have an issue/situation with a daughter that had her front teeth knocked out at practice and while at the hospital we find out the team did not have coverage. Yes they have played in events which I think is strange no one checked then. Yes they collected dues for insurance. Yes we did have family insurance but it would be nice to have the "team insurance" to cover the high insurance deductible and cost NOT covered.

Any thoughts?

Team insurance is typically required. They actually cover very little. Policies will say 1 or 2 million etc.... but in reality its only as a back up to the personal coverage, and in all the years Ive done this, Ive yet to see an actual payment

My experience was also that the team insurance was supplemental to our primary personal coverage. However, I discovered that by listing both on any medical forms the two companies fought it out. We also found out most organizations/tournament hosts carry blanket policies as well in addition to requiring team coverage. If you are part of a city league, or if team is registered with USSSA, ASA etc. you may have coverage there and can file a claim. If team collected money and just didn't purchase a policy I would consult attorney if costs are significant. Caveat is that if it's a small independent team, the coach / manager (whoever collected money for insurance) is the only person you could collect damages from and that obviously opens another can of worms.

A little off topic...but a good CYA thing I learned from DDs first travel coach is to ask for a copy of the insurance policy and numbers and keep it in DDs bag. Odds are if injury occurs, the person who has that info wont be at hospital with you.

It appears that some insurance policies only cover the girls while they are in tournaments, so some teams don't get the insurance until close to the time for the tournaments. Around here the coaches frantically go around making sure all the girls are covered before the first tournament. For fall tournaments, the girls were able to carry over insurance from their previous team, if the coaches were on good terms.

However, a lot of teams simply do not get insurance for the fall and winter practices.

Which means that maybe your team got the $ for tournament insurance but not practice insurance.

USSSA covers Tournaments and Practice up to 20 players and covers coaches if you add them to the roster. ASA insurance will cover your travel time to and from practice and games. Triple Crown Sports and PGF I'm not sure what they cover.

In Phoenix you must have team insurance to play in events

If you have "friendlies" you should have tournament insurance I've been told.

Our league claims on ASA about once a year as co-insurance to pay someone's deductibles if they want to file. In the three years I was president, they never turned down a claim.
