I was looking into a parting gift idea for the players of our rec team for the spring of next year. Something like a "greatest clips" on a usb stick or something with just their outs or hits or silly moments. Just something to have them to look at later on and think about to hopefully keep them excited about the sport. After all, without new players coming back, the sport doesn't keep growing, right?

So, my DD just had the greatest idea (IMHO) ever known to softball history. She came downstairs as I was looking up how I could do this and said, if you really want to get more kids involved, you need to make a softball game. Not just about the sport, though. Make it gritty and cute and fierce. Make it something like "A Day In The Life of A Softball Gladiator" (as she looked off into our space picturing it). According to her, it should start as a 5 year old playing 6U rec ball. You have to practice everyday, do chores, and do good in school to qualify for rec ball the following season. you have to do off-season training to tryout for the select team. And keep going to travel ball and MS and HS. And every step has obstacles according to her.

Here's the part I loved. She said you don't win the game until you graduate from college and start a career. Excited, I thought to myself.....SHE'S LISTENING! SHE'S ACTUALLY LISTENING!

Then, I got pretty somber and solemn and thought to myself......Oh God! She's listening......she's actually listening.

I have thought of this softball game before, but the only problem is once girls get old enough and softball is more like a part time job(full time for some) they won't play the game at all, they cherish their down time. Will be good for the 10u's and 12u's though

Well, that and the whole NCAA likeness issue. Kids like to see the "pros" and envision themselves imho. At least that's what I did when I played video games.

Right Here For Now
Every year, the HS coach makes a DVD of still photos and accompanies it to the latest top 40 songs that apply to that series of photos. Then he burns enough for the entire team and hands them out at the Softball banquet. There's always laughter, smiles and some crying...especially from the Seniors during the showing. It's the highlight of the banquet for everyone and we always look forward to the next one. Unfortunately, there's only two more to look forward to and the next one is coming up way too quickly for my tastes. As everyone says, it goes by way too quickly and I can personally attest to that. Yesterday she was a 5 year old chasing butterflies in the OF and building sandcastles in the IF. Today she's driving, looking at colleges that have programs in her field of interest and hoping to be able to play SB for them.
