I know kids that have done it but I never asked them how they felt about it. DD was asked to join a team a couple of states away and it looks like a good fit and a great opportunity. Anyone have any experience with this scenario and what were your impressions.

My dd played for 2 different out of state teams. One was set up by her college coach, she did not enjoy it much at all. The second was a team she had picked up with a few times and really liked playing with them. The first was a more beneficial to our family. All costs were paid for by the team: travel, hotels, uniforms, everything. The second was partially funded and required out of pocket costs to the family. As far as playing with an out of state team there was nothing that was a deterrent for the sole reason of being out of state. Neither required extra travel for practices and we would have been traveling every weekend for tournaments regardless of where the team was located. Since my dd was a pitcher we had a pretty full schedule throwing and workouts through the week. For parents who may not be the ones to catch, pitch or work with their kid and rely on the coaches it could be a problem keeping them game ready. Mt opinion is that if it's a good fit, your dd is on board and the family can manage then go for it. It gives them a chance to be out on their own(i would guess) traveling and rooming without parents. Just a great chance for them to grow.

There are a number of good tourneys in and around NJ that the team would come in for so everything is not an away deal for us. I was more concerned about her not practicing much with the team and not fitting in or becoming part of the "team". I guess it's really on her to make friends quickly and to stay involved when not there.

Slingit, did your DD feel connected to the team or am I inflating that aspect of playing.

The one she chose to play for she did, really good fit. The girls and parents were closer and very friendly. The one that was a recommendation she did not, it was all business all the time. Her college coaches allowed for more player/parent interaction between and after games. She would have not been there if not set up by college coach. If she is going to travel with the team and there will be times you guys won't be with her then the connection with the girls and coaches becomes more important. IMO

Most of the marquee teams in our area have players from out of state. TB is strong in GA and a lot of girls who want to play D1 need to be on a marquee team for exposure. The ones on my DD's team did not come to practices, they just showed up for tournaments. GA plays HS ball in the fall, so our TB schedule starts in Feb and runs through the end of July. Out of state players who play spring HS ball (most states) play when they can and join us full time when HS ball is over.

OK has the same scenario, hard to play those fall texas tb tourneys with hs ball in full effect.

DD played on an out of state team last half of summer season. She trained here and met them for tournaments. Couldn't have worked out better. The experience of playing alongside and against girls working toward similar goals was priceless. She only played with them three tournaments, but was closer to some of the new girls than she was her regular team.

DD1 played the last 2 summers with a Cali team. She worked out with DD2 team and would drive over for tourneys. She even got to play Scenic City with a Midwest team. Very good experience in preparation for College by not having Mom and Dad with her.
