Looking through listings of local tryouts that are starting this weekend. My DD has only really tried out for one team, so I am ignorant of the normal practices. Looking at one local team, they have three different dates, with each being three hours of practice. Are the girls trying out expected to be at all 9 hours of tryout time, or are they suppose to pick one of the dates as their tryout time? I have emailed the contact for the team, but no response.

thanks.

You will find that teams like to set tryouts to be simultaneous with their leading competitor, so they would love you to attend all 3 and thus not attend the tryouts of their sworn enemies. They would love for your kid to commit to all 9 hours of dedication to their team, but that may not help her earn a spot.

Yeah, that is the problem. The second day of tryouts for this team, is at the same time as the first date (of 2 days) of tryouts for another team in the area. She was out of softball completely for a year, so I think she will have a hard time even making a team like the team that has three days. Just was wondering if missing one of the days out of three will keep her from even being considered.

This... already seeing the 'competing time' tryouts being posted and the season is not even over for a lot of teams.

Pick one - if you are interested in the team over other teams go to their tryout first or at least prioritize over other tryouts. But don't limit your options by what a team you are trying out for wants.

Missing one tryout wont hurt a bit. I know 10 minutes into a tryout whether someone I hadn't seen before is someone we may be interested in. Less than an hour in I know whether we are offering someone a spot or not. I certainly don't need 9 hours of tryouts

Just sharing my experience, and this was our first time trying out with several travel teams, and I'd love to hear other's responses. We registered for the first day of tryouts with the team we *really* wanted to make. After that tryout, which didn't go as well as DD would have liked, the coaches encouraged her to come back as many times as she wanted. So we did. Tonight will be our 4th and last time with that team and she's learned so much. The second team she tried out with we did the same: registered for first day, then came back the next as some of the coaching staff weren't there the first day (PC in particular). Whether this helps of not, I don't know. But the experience has been invaluable. DD learned more in the first 2 hours of tryouts than she learned all year with her current team (don't get me started).

Not sure whether it makes an impact on the coaches or not. But I can't help but think that seeing your child hustling and playing their heart out makes a good impression. Plus whether your DD improves over tryouts with their input. We did this with our top choice teams; fortunately, there are some other teams that will allow for a private tryout should we not be able to make the team tryouts. I'm surprised you're not offered that option. But perhaps their failure to respond to you is an indication of the management of the team. All teams I've reached out to for more information were very responsive.

Best of luck to your DD in tryouts!

Go to the first trout. Unless this is some sort of elite team that really requires you attend all the tryouts, they only need to see you one time. If they really like you, you will be contacted before the next tryout. Go to other teams' tryouts.

If your daughter fills a need on a particular team, she will be contacted early. If not, then you may have to play the waiting game.

JMO...If this "9 hours for tryouts" team goes to Nationals, PGF, etc. every year and is a LEGITIMATE contender to win...AND you truly believe (without rose colored glasses) that your DD is a fit for this team after not playing for a year...AND this team will not only be fun but will properly develop your DD's skills, then by all means commit to the 9 hours...but only if your DD truly wants to.

DD has gone to both days of trouts for a team because the coaches were so positive, saying things like "I can really see you on this team", "You're coming back Sunday, aren't you", only to find out later that the spot she wanted was filled over the phone just before the first tryout started.
Just make sure you're looking out for your DD and never assume anyone else will.

This team is not a national contender or any where close to it, I don't believe, but I am not interested in any of that at all. My DD would not be anywhere near ready to try out for a team of that nature. There is no illusion of playing at a college level. She just enjoys the game and wants to play on a decent team. Her team before her surgery was a mid level B team, and that is a good fit for her. I asked the original question because I wanted her to go to several different teams tryouts to get the experience and use it as a learning time. The team that has the 9 hours of time has changed their name to "XXX Elite" this year, so I don't know that she would be good enough anyway, just wanted her to have the experience.
