This just in.....during pool play in Usssa World Series 12u event in Perris California, a pitcher was called for skipping 1 time.

The team's fans were incredulous. When asked what she did wrong a random dad from the opposing team (me) responded "she's been skipping the whole game, but who cares, she throws 47 and has walked 9 batters, let her do her thing".

After the incident, the pitcher quickly went back to skipping and the umps ignored it the rest of the game.

I will point out an illegal pitcher every time I see one. My main goal in this is to help the pitcher learn the correct way to pitch. I think the rule exists for a reason but the punishment is a bit harsh. I don't think the base runners should get a base (but I take it all day long), but I do agree with it being a ball or result of the play. Just teach them to throw correctly it would be harder but more beneficial. However, as they get older does it matter any more???

EDIT TO ADD: One thing I noticed a lot of this past week at nationals was when I could just sit and watch a game I would watch the field ump with a runner on first. They are never looking at the pitcher or the base runner and always watching home plate. Girls leaving early everywhere.

My daughter pitched in the 9U USSSA World Series a couple weeks ago. She was actually called for TWO illegal pitches in the same game.

Apparently, DD took the mound in conjunction with placing the ball in her mitt and thus, violated the rule of having her hands separated. I thought it was petty but it didn't seem to affect her psyche because she pitched outstanding all week.

Our 16u team played in the USSSA Nationals in Kansas City and I actually saw at least 5 IP's called during the tournament just in the games that we played in. I was in shock that they were called. Not because they weren't illegal but because someone had the gonads to actually do their job and call an IP when it is an IP.

Now if they would call them during the rest of the season they wouldn't be calling so many during nationals. If they are IP at Nationals, then they are IP during pool play at the local tournament also.

I have actually had an ump step up and tell me if I would say something he would call an IP. Not wanting to be rude in the middle of a game, I shrugged my shoulders and said, "you might actually help them by calling it but if it is not blatant enough for you to call it outright, then I do not see the issue". We won handily and no IP was ever called.
