So while at Buckeye Field watching TTUN hammer my Buckeyes like a 16d nail, a fould ball made into the stands, and an usher/official (not sure which) walked over and the ball was given to her, which she tossed down next to the dugout. It didn't go back into play, near as I could tell.

What gives? Fans don't get to keep the ball in NCAA FP? Or is it just some weird thing here in OH?

I go to UNC and NC State games, and they ask you to return them. The backstops are not that high, so if you stood behind the stands and waited and were willing to out-run a couple of opportunistic kids to retrieve them, you might collect several. It doesn't provide the same thrill as catching a ball at a major league game, where you might be 1-in-30,000 that was hoping a ball will find you. Plus, UNC and NC State games are free, so I can't complain.

Every NCAA fastpitch game I've been to fans have to return the ball and they usually go back in play as long as there are no cuts. Exception was at WCWS, fans can keep foul balls, but on home runs the WCWS staff tracks them down and gets them from the fan in exchange for another ball. My guess is that WCWS home run ball goes to the player as a souvenir.

OK, why? If my DD caught a foul ball and had to give it back, she'd be kinda crushed. I know that OSU has more than enough money to buy them some more balls. WTH?

At the Texas A&M games you can keep the foul balls courtesy of the Dixie Chicken. Go Dixie Chicken!!! Seton Hall wants them back.

At Washington you have to give them back as well. I really don't get it either, it's not like they don't have thousands of them. At clinics, they even let you take a ball home with you if you're in need of one.

My youngest DD tracked down several foul balls at the last game we went to and she was rewarded with temporary UW tatoos. She had one on her cheek for a week.

At U of AZ. they would lose a lot of balls, if we weren't returning them. I have never counted the amount of foul balls and HRs, but it might be as high as 15-20.
