Apparently DD's school district randomly tests all athletes for alcohol and drugs use. One failed test equals suspension for the season. Was wondering how prevalent it is for HS athletes to consent to random drug testing and if any parents have a problem with this?

I do not think consent is an issue. You either take the wiz quiz or your season is over or worse. I never took issue with respect to athletics since participation is a privilege. So long at the established drug testing protocol is followed not some convoluted process created by the school. In other words it is done by a 3rd party lab, not pee on a strip in the locker room. Random tests for students is another issue since attendance is compulsory.

What is the frequency of the tests, and how is the randomness achieved?

The issue I took to the school board was why is my kid being subjected to them when her teachers and coaches aren't? Obviously it didn't go anywhere but I felt all school personnel should have to live by the same rules, of course they don't, and sometimes I wonder just how prevalent drug use is among High School teachers, coaches and administrators? Does you daughters High School require the same of their personnel?

I wouldn't have a problem with it as long as the policy was made clear at the begining of tryouts. I agree with the 3rd party tester. Don't agree with the 1+=done. I don't see it happening anytime soon around here with all the educational budget cuts going on.

paraphrasing but here is the general policy:

Selection for Drug Testing

Student ID numbers for all student athletes will be placed in a selection pool. On a periodic basis throughout the school year, a designated staff will randomly draw student ID numbers for drug testing. At a minimum, 10% of all student athletes will be selected and tested. Student provides urine sample to the Health Office and preliminarily tested by "dip-test". If positive, student completes "Specimen Control Form" and the urine sample is sent to an independent laboratory to confirm test result. Student and parents are notified same day of random testing and the results.

Just curious how the ASA roster looks in different states? Our roster states this just above where each parent signs:

"3) Players are subject to the ASA Drug Control Procedures and Policies as provided in the ASA code."
