I have had a few of my coaches be all for team captains and a few others against them. Some feel it separates the team & makes the girls who, aren't captains feel like they aren't good enough to be one. I've always had captains, I think they lead & set by example. What's your opinion?

Will never have them. I have found that they create far more problems than they solve. Adding another level of management in what should already be a well functioning, flat organization never makes sense. Players should be well focused individual contributors. True leaders will emerge over time and gain the respect of others around them. They should not need the trappings of a title, bestowed upon them by the Head Coach to be effective.

The leaders on our team know who they are and don't need a title to go along with it.

Neither of my softball playing daughters have been on a team with team captains.

OTOH, my DS's old HS rowing club had team captains, 2 boys and 2 girls every year, who had a certain responsibility and a leadership role. In general, these were seniors who had shown leadership over the past few years, and being named team captain was to a great extent an acknowledgement of the leadership they had already shown.

We have never had a team captain for TB, but my DD's HS coach basically designates all the seniors as captains....

I rotate the team Captains. For each team function it is one player's job to be the team Captain for that day. It forces the shy girls to step up and the over-bearing girls have to take a secondary role. It works great. The girls are not afraid to step up and take charge on the field when needed.

The way to keep track of it is very simple. It goes by jersey number. The girls keep track of it. I don't have to worry about it.

I have used it as a motivational tool in coaching although it wasn't softball. The end result didn't carry much extra responsibility but was more of an award for hard work, good practices, etc. It can be very effective used in that manner.

A lot depends upon the coach. If the coach instructs the captains about her/his expectations and give clear guidance about how to accomplish the goals, they can be helpful.

The problem is that most coaches pick out a couple of kids (almost always the best players on the team or their DDs) to be captains. They assume that because a kid can hit and throw a round yellow ball, she will be a great leader.

I have tried it both with and without captains. Personally, I dont like captains I found it causes a divide between players. Than you run into the isssue if your captain is performing or fooling around than the team thinks its ok becuase the captain is. I like to assign players to lead drills, team huddles, pre-gmae umpire meetings etc. on a random basis.
